Alumni director search extended, interim director named
The nationwide search for a new director of alumni relations at Emporia State University has been extended and an interim director has been named, said Judith Heasley, executive director of University Advancement and president of the ESU Foundation.
Jesse Tuel, the director of Advancement communications, will serve in the interim capacity while a new search is conducted.
“We have the utmost confidence in our current alumni office staff, and in Jesse’s leadership abilities, and we know the alumni office won’t skip a beat as we continue looking for the right person to fill this critical position,” Heasley said.

ESU selects Mehring as provost and VP, interim dean named in Teachers College
Although Emporia State University conducted a nationwide search for its new provost & vice president for academic affairs, the perfect candidate for the job has been on the ESU campus for the past 27 years. Dr. Tes Mehring, currently dean of The Teachers College at ESU, will become the university’s chief academic officer in July. Read more
Meanwhile, ESU has tapped Dr. Kenneth Weaver to serve as interim dean of the Teachers College, ESU’s nationally-recognized teacher preparation program. Weaver is a Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor and current chair of ESU’s department of psychology and special education. Read more

Ten ESU graduate students receive awards
Ten Emporia State University graduate students will have some additional financial assistance driving their advanced studies, research and creative activities this fall. The students are recipients of Academic Achievement Awards for the 2008-2009 academic year. Read more
Phi Kappa Phi initiates new members
The academic honor society that recognizes superior scholarship initiated a new group of members at Emporia State University on May 16. Phi Kappa Phi’s rigorous standards limit membership to the upper 7.5 percent of juniors, the upper ten percent of seniors, and outstanding graduate students, alumni and faculty. Since the ESU chapter was founded in 1980, over 700 students have been initiated into membership. Read more, including a list of new initiates, by clicking here.
ESU, BEST Program honor graduates at reception
A nationally award-winning program that helps the Butler County area grow its own supply of teachers will send 23 newly-minted educators to area school systems this fall. The BEST (short for Butler-Emporia from Students to Teachers) Program recognized those graduates at a reception on May 16 at Butler Community College in El Dorado. Read more
Teachers College students' achievements honored
A long-time faculty member and 21 Emporia State University students received special recognition at the 24th Annual Teachers College Honors Banquet on May 9. A total of 41 undergraduate students were also honored for achievement of a 3.75 grade point average or higher. Rossbach wins national championship for Hornets
Senior Jonel Rossbach capped her outstanding career with a national championship in the 5000m over the weekend to propel the Emporia State women to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Rossbach’s championship was one of seven All-American efforts for ESU during the three day meet in Walnut, Calif. The Hornet men placed 18th thanks to All-American performances by Craig Saalfeld and Kenton Lonberger. Read more track news
ESU softball finishes as national runners-up, falling in championship game
For the second time in three years the Emporia State Hornets overcame a loss in the second game of the NCAA Division II Softball Championship Tournament to make an appearance in the national championship game. The Hornets defeated #22 St. Edwards 2-1 in 13 innings before falling to #8 Humboldt State 1-0 in the national championship game on May 17. ESU ends the season 48-17 and made their second appearance in the national championship game in three years. The Hornets lose four seniors, Jessie Wiard, April Huddleston, Samantha Sheeley and Megan Grisell, and will return six of eight position players next season. Read more
#5 ESU baseball team eliminated from Central Regional tourney
The #5 ESU baseball team was eliminated from the NCAA Divison II Central Regional tournament with a 17-14 loss to Nebraska-Omaha on May 17. The game saw 31 hits and 13 extra base hits to go along with seven home runs. Nine pitchers saw time between the two teams during the game. ESU finished the season 50-10 after making it to the regional for the fifth straight year, and achieving an MIAA-record 35-game winning streak.
Also, ESU senior catcher Keith Hernandez was named the 2008 National Player of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) while Eric Shortell was named second team All-American. Three Hornets earned spots on the Daktronics All-American Team selected by the College Sports Information Director's of America (CoSIDA). On the Daktronics team Hernandez was named a first team All-American while Brian Majors and Shortell were named to the second team. Hernandez finished the season hitting .462 with 18 home runs and 80 RBI. He was the MIAA Player of the Year and was named first team All-Region by both Daktronics and the ABCA.Season. Read more
ESU Athletics golf tournament and auction set for June 6-7
It's time again for the annual ESU Athletics Golf Tournament and Auction to raise funds for the Hornet Athletic Program. Festivities begin on June 6 with the Auction at Bruff's Sports Bar & Grill with the golf tournament to follow on June 7 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. To learn more, see the brochure online.
