Emporia State prepares spring commencement

Emporia State University’s Welch Stadium will be buzzing with the sights and sounds of the institution’s 141st commencement on Saturday, May 17. The ceremony marking conferring of undergraduate and graduate degrees begins at 9:30 a.m. About 625 students are candidates for undergraduate degrees which they will receive either this month or at the conclusion of summer classes in August. Graduate degrees will be awarded to 284 students. Read more of the story, or see commencement details.

Softball and baseball rounding the bases

Softball player April Huddleston helps build a home
April Huddleston, a senior softball player from Topeka, works on a Habitat for Humanity home in Houston. Before the national tournament begins, the team took part in the community service effort.

Big news from the diamonds at ESU’s Trusler Complex! The softball team hosted and then won the NCAA North Central Regional tournament last weekend and the baseball team hosts its North Central Regional this week.

The #6 women won the regional tournament to advance to the eight-team D-II national championship tournament in Houston, where they’ll play at 5:30 p.m. tonight against C.W. Post. The game will be broadcast live on KVOE/1400 AM, or online at www.kvoe.com and www.ncaa.com.

It’s the Hornets’ second trip to the national tourney in the last three years, and they got there by beating each team they faced last weekend in Emporia. Earlier in May, the women won their fifth straight MIAA tournament championship, becoming the first MIAA team to win the MIAA regular season and tournament championships in the same year four straight times. Read more at www.emporia.edu/athletics/softball/.

The #4 baseball team was selected to host the regional tournament after finishing the season at 48-8 with an MIAA regular season championship. As the tourney’s #1 seed, they’ll take on Concordia St. Paul at 7 p.m. Thursday at Emporia’s Trusler Complex. If they keep winning this weekend, they may face the University of Central Missouri – the team that ended ESU’s 35-game winning streak earlier this year, and then beat them 4-3 in the MIAA championship game. Best of luck, Hornets! Read more baseball news at www.emporia.edu/athletics/baseball.

Correction

In the April 30 Hornet News Update, we misidentified the University of Central Missouri in a story on ESU’s baseball team, using instead the Warrensburg institution’s former name. We regret the error.
