Emporia Connection reunion coming this weekend
One of Emporia State University’s most active alumni chapters, the Emporia Connection, expects more than 100 alumni to attend a reunion this weekend in Emporia. The African-American alumni chapter has distinguished itself through well-attended reunion events and a scholarship for ESU students. In 2006, about 50 alumni gathered in Atlanta, Ga., and in 2005, the group established the Emporia Connection Legacy Scholarship to assist African-American students at Emporia State University.
The weekend includes a meet-and-greet from 6 to 11 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Sauder Alumni Center; attending the ESU Track and Field Relays at 11 a.m. Saturday at Welch Stadium; the Emporia Connection Scholarship Banquet at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Union’s Webb Lecture Hall; and a bon voyage breakfast with live entertainment from 9 to 11:30 a.m. in the Memorial Union’s Skyline Room. For more information or to RSVP, contact Joan Lauber at (620) 341-5440 or jlauber@emporia.edu.
Senior Week and the Outstanding Senior banquet
For Emporia State’s graduating seniors, the month of April holds a fair amount of excitement and anticipation.

The cost is $12 per person. RSVP to Nikki Metz at 341-5440 or nmetz1@emporia.edu.
Other events include the Emporia State Federal Credit Union Senior Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in Webb Lecture Hall; Senior Appreciation Day with discounts at local businesses on Wednesday; and Senior Night on the Town from 8 to 11 p.m. Thursday at Wheat State Grill in downtown Emporia.

Dr. Jeremy Mitchell-Koch knew his research was on target when recent media reports documented the presence of pharmaceuticals in water supplies across the country. Now, the Emporia State University chemist is hoping to develop a simple testing device that government agencies can use to economically determine the concentration of drugs in the water we drink. “It’s pretty gratifying in a lot of ways to see an idea that I’ve had for a long time becoming an issue,” said Mitchell-Koch, assistant professor of physical sciences. “It makes me feel like I’m working on an important problem.”
