John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk raises $10,000

The third annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk on Saturday, April 19, at Emporia State University raised about $10,000 for ESU scholarships. More than 200 participants followed the 5K running course or the 2-mile walking route, ending at the Sauder Alumni Center for refreshments and awards. All proceeds from the annual event, sponsored this year by Barnhart Builders of Olpe, Kan., benefit ESU’s General Scholarship Fund. ESU recognizes employee service with annual awards

A combined total of 840 years of service on the part of 46 employees was noted during TJ Rains and Gloria SwiftESU’s Employee Service Recognition reception on April 25, while T.J. Rains and Gloria Swift were named the university’s top two employees.

Rains, of the Technology and Computing Services Department, was named Outstanding Unclassified Professional of the Year. Swift, administrative specialist in the Office of International Education, was named Outstanding Classified Professional of the Year. ESU employees who have reached 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service were also recognized. See the full list by clicking here.

Kansas students select 2008 William Allen White Children’s Book Award winners

“A Dog’s Life: The Autobiography of a Stray,” by Ann M. Martin and “Airball: My Life in Briefs,” by L. D. Harkrader are this year’s winners of the William Allen White Children’s Book Awards. The awards will be presented at the 56th annual William Allen White Children’s Book Awards ceremony Saturday, Oct. 4 at William Lindsay White Auditorium in Emporia. Read more

Pianist returns to help Emporia celebrate Cinco de Mayo

An internationally-known pianist makes a return visit to Emporia in May to help the community observe the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Dr. Jesús María Figueroa and four of his piano students will wrap up their visit to Emporia with a public concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 5 in Heath Recital Hall, Beach Hall on the ESU campus. Baseball’s winning streak ends at 35 games

The incredible winning streak of ESU’s baseball team may have come to an end last weekend against the University of Central Missouri, but the postseason is nearly upon us. The men dropped three games to UCM in Warrensburg but won the series finale, tying the MIAA record for most conference wins in a season. The Hornets, now 43-6 and 29-3 in the MIAA, will face Washburn in the opener of the Turnpike Tussle at 5 p.m. Friday, May 2 at Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex. The rivalry continues with two games at Washburn on Saturday, with the fourth game back in Emporia on Sunday. For more baseball news, click here.

Softball wins fourth consecutive league crown

For the first time in MIAA history, a softball team has won four consecutive league titles – and it’s your Hornets. The #21 Hornets swept Washburn 4-2 and 11-3 on Senior Day at the Trusler Sports Complex this weekend to clinch the league regular season championship and the top seed in this week's post season tournament. The Hornets are scheduled to play at Newman in Wichita on Tuesday and begin play in the MIAA Tournament on Thursday. ESU will take on the eighth seed at 12 noon at the Mid-America West Sports Complex in Shawnee, Kan. For more softball news, click here.

ESU's Kent places second in MIAA heptathlon

Brooke Kent placed second with a provisional qualifying mark in the MIAA heptathlon, while Ryan Green was eighth in the heptathlon to give ESU a total of nine points. Craig Saalfeld also provisionalled in the decathlon as he placed sixth overall. Meanwhile, in the final tune-up for the MIAA Championships, Emporia State brought home four provisional qualifiers from the OU Sooner Invitational on Saturday. ESU splits four matches at MIAA tennis tourney

The ESU men's tennis team won their first match against an MIAA opponent in five years and the women tied for fifth after dropping a five and a half hour long match in the first round of the MIAA Tennis Tournament over the weekend. Get your tennis news here.
