Scholarship drive surpasses goal Capitol Federal scholars named Crisis in masculinity, with Katz |
MIAA tourney games and alumni event
The MIAA basketball tournament kicks off today in Kansas City! See your #21 Lady Hornets take on Truman at 6 p.m. today in Municipal Auditorium, and then see the men tussle with #15 Southwest Baptist at noon on Friday.
After the men’s game, we’re hosting ESU alumni and friends at the “Live in the Lot!” complex, several blocks east of the auditorium. All MIAA schools will have displays set up on Friday afternoon until 6 p.m. Join us for refreshments, and cheer the Hornets on to victory!

On-campus scholarship drive surpasses its goal
Congratulations, ESU! The $50,000 goal for faculty/staff giving through our annual campus drive has been surpassed by more than $8,000! Through Scholarbucks Cafe, where faculty and staff can support any scholarship or area of their choice, we’ve eclipsed the totals from previous years - and our students are the ones who benefit. Former Topeka business owner leaves musical legacy
The melodious sounds of a generous gift from the late Donna Allen of Topeka will ring throughout the Emporia State University music department for years to come. Allen, who owned and operated the Donna Allen Keyboard Center at 17th and Fairlawn in Topeka, passed away in December 2006. Honoring a strong relationship with the ESU music department, Allen established a charitable remainder trust from the sale of a home in Topeka, leaving nearly $80,000 to provide pianos and piano equipment for ESU. Alumna earns Kansas Arts Commission recognition
Dr. Ann Birney (BA 1970, MLS 1977) of Admire has received a Mid-Career Fellowship from the Kansas Arts Commission for her story-telling skills. Birney performs first-person tales of renowned women like Amelia Earhart, Rachel Carson and Julia Archibald Holmes. Birney is a composite teacher and suffragist for “Ride Into History,” a history-themed duo that pairs her with ESU’s Dr. Joyce Thierer to share their unique history lessons across the country.
In the Feb. 20 edition of Hornet News Update, we told you about an ESU professor and two students who garnered KAC awards, and an astute reader shared that Ann Birney was recognized as well. Thanks for the tip, and congratulations, Dr. Birney!

Student retention work helps ESU post spring enrollment gain
Efforts concentrated on encouraging students already enrolled at Emporia State University to stay in school and finish their degrees are paying off in the form of a spring semester enrollment gain this year, as ESU posted its highest spring enrollment since 1972.
ESU’s spring enrollment hit 6,154 students on the 20th day of classes, the official headcount-tallying day for institutions of higher education governed by the Kansas Board of Regents. The latest figures augment a trend of spring semester enrollment gains that ESU has posted during the last nine years. Read more
ESU recognizes 2008 Capitol Federal Savings scholars
The 2007-08 class of Capitol Federal Savings Scholars in Emporia State University’s School of Business was honored at a banquet Feb. 20 at ESU. The program, in its sixth year at ESU, is supporting 28 students with the annual award.
Beau Bemis, a senior from Ottawa, sees the scholarship as a way to “focus on and achieve his academic goals.” Read more
Sen. Roberts visits ESU, urges more to become teachers
“We have an ‘unperfect storm’ brewing,” said U. S. Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), and he wasn’t talking about the sleet and ice that accompanied his visit to Emporia State University on Feb. 21. Read more
Emporia State stages “The Vagina Monologues”
It’s become a tradition at Emporia State University – a reading of Eve Ensler’s “The Vagina Monologues” each year during Women’s History Month. This year’s reading of the award-winning episodic play will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 11 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 in Brighton Lecture Hall on the ESU campus. Read more
Choir performs at state convention
Emporia State University’s 36-member A Capella Choir was one of the featured attractions of this year’s Kansas Music Educators Association (KMEA) state convention. The choir, under the direction of Dr. Terry Barham, professor of music at ESU, performed March 1 at the Century II Convention Center’s Mary Jane Teall Theatre. Presentation explores media, violence and masculinity
Jackson Katz, a former all-star football player, will bring his multimedia presentation “Tough Guise: Violence, Media and the Crisis in Masculinity” to ESU at 7 p.m. Monday, March 10, in the Memorial Union’s Colonial Ballroom. Katz the founder and director of MVP Strategies, an organization that provides gender violence prevention training to numerous organizations. Read more
English professor to receive Ruth Schillinger Faculty Award
Dr. Susan Kendrick, assistant professor in the department of English, is the recipient of the Ruth Schillinger Faculty Award for 2008. The specialist in Renaissance literature and feminist literary theory is completing a book about Queen Elizabeth I, and began teaching at ESU in 2001. Read more

Stueve named league MVP
All-American Michelle Stueve of the MIAA regular season champion Lady Hornets was a
unanimous selection as the league’s most valuable player by a vote of the league coaches. She is joined on the All-MIAA team by second team selection Cassondra Boston and honorable mention picks Ida Edwards and Andrea Leiker. Leiker was also a member of the All-Defensive Team.
Stueve became the MIAA’s all-time scoring leader earlier this season and now has 2,322 career points. She needs one rebound to become just the third MIAA player to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. This is the third straight year Stueve has been a unanimous first-team All-MIAA performer after earning the league’s Freshman of the Year award in 2005.

The team, meanwhile, clinched a share of the league title with a 120-83 rout of Southwest Baptist, led by Stueve’s 28 points and 12 rebounds. As a team, the Lady Hornets tied the MIAA record with 19 made three-pointers. The women will play Truman at 6 p.m. today in the MIAA tournament.
Townsend named first-time All-MIAA
ESU’s DeAndre Townsend was named First Team All-MIAA for the second straight year. He
is the first two-time first-team All-MIAA performer for ESU since Andy Uphoff in 1992-93. The men will play Southwest Baptist at noon on Friday in the MIAA tournament, a week after dropping a 82-79 game to the #15 Bearcats on Saturday.
ESU sending eight to NCAA championships
The Empor ia State track and field teams will be sending five men and three women to compete in eight events at the NCAA D-II indoor track and field championships on March 14-15 in Mankato, Minn. Both teams finished in the top three of the MIAA championships for the third time in the last four years. Read the recap
Softball goes 3-1 at Cougar Classic
The #11 Hornets defeated Southern Indiana 6-5 in their final game at the Cougar Classic hosted by SIU-Edwardsville on Sunday. The Hornets fell to defending national champion SIU-E, 9-2, in their only loss of the weekend. ESU defeated Southern Indiana and USML on Saturday. Read more
Baseball wins over Upper Iowa
The #18 Hornets trailed early again putting up nine runs in the third and four inning to erase a 4-3 deficit for a 14-5 victory. At the plate Brian Majors led off the ball game with his second home run in as many days. Two batters later Eric Shortell pulled a home run down the left field line, his third of the season. Majors finished three of four on the night and drove in five runs giving him nine RBI in the last two games. Read more
