Colloboration between ESU and Olathe schools wins national award
An innovative program that prepares new teachers for success in the classroom has earned recognition for the two educational organizations collaborating on the project. The Association of Teacher Educators has presented its 2008 Award for the Distinguished Program in Teacher Education to the Professional Development School (PDS) program developed by Emporia State University and Olathe USD 233. The award was presented at the association’s annual meeting in late February in New Orleans. Read more
Kansas Business Hall of Fame announces 2008 inductees
One man whose name is synonymous with hospitality and another whose company is one of the most highly regarded in the financial services and retirement planning industry are this year’s Kansas Business Hall of Fame (KBHF) inductees at Emporia State University. The late Fred Harvey, founder of the Harvey House restaurant and hotel chain, and Howard R. Fricke, past chairman of Security Benefit of Topeka, will be recognized at the KBHF induction ceremony Tuesday, June 17 at Emporia State University. Read more
ESU speaker discusses role of women in today's military
A presentation on the role of women in today’s military will be one of the last events of the Women’s History Month observance at Emporia State University. Maj. Beth Behn, Army Staff College Ft. Leavenworth, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 in Visser Hall room 330 on the ESU campus. Her presentation draws from her own broad experience about the lives and work of American women in today’s military. Read more
Debate team finishes regular season with victory
The Emporia State debate team wrapped up its regular season on a strong note, finishing in the quarterfinals of the Northwest Cross-Examination Debate Association Championship (NW CEDA) held in Walla Walla, Wash. The team of sophomore Kurt Fifelski and senior Kelly Thompson lost to the 17th-ranked team in the country in a close debate in the quarterfinals. Read more
Students earn Boylan Scholarship honors
Emporia State University has awarded Laurence C. Boylan Scholar Awards to Andrea Mott and Chelsea Patton. Mott, of Derby, is currently working on her masters’ degree in history with a concentration in world history through ESU’s department of social sciences. Patton is from Topeka and is pursuing a master’s degree in school psychology through the department of psychology and special education. Both students will be honored at ESU’s 2008 Research and Creativity Forum April 10. Read more

#25 Lady Hornets fall short in regional final
Michelle Stueve scored 25 points with a team high 10 rebounds, but it was not enough as #25 Emporia State fell to #24 Washburn, 73-58, in the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship game on Monday night in Canyon, Texas. Read more
The men, meanwhile, lost the MIAA Tournament championship game, 57-51, to #2-seed Northwest Missouri on March 9 in Kansas City. ESU became the first #8 seed to advance to the tourney’s championship game, beating #1-seed Southwest Baptist and then Fort Hays State to advance to the final. ESU’s DeAndre Townsend was named to the Datronics All-South Central Region Second Team. Read more
#15 ESU's bats come to life in win over Newman
The Hornets scored three or more runs in every inning but the third as they clobbered Newman 27-10 at Glennen Field in the Trusler Sports Complex on Wednesday. The Hornets put up 28 hits as all but three of the 17 Hornet hitters finished with a hit. The Hornets moved to 17-3 on the season and will play Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo., on Friday and Saturday. Read more
Hornet softball falls to Winona State at home
The ESU offense only managed three hits as Winona State earned a 5-2 victory over the Hornets on Saturday. Samantha Sheely pitched all seven innings for ESU and struck out 10 allowing seven hits. Read more
ESU men and women tracksters both place in top 25 nationally
Emporia State will bring home a total of six All-Americans and a pair of top-25 team finishes from the NCAA D-II Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the Minnesota State-Mankato over the weekend.
The ESU men placed 11th in the team competition, led by three All-American performances in the high jump. Sophomores Alex Pyle and Dustin Andrews were two of three athletes to clear 6-10.25 (2.09m), but they were placed third and fourth based on number of misses. Junior Craig Saalfeld rounded out the scoring for ESU with an eighth-place finish. It is the first time in school history ESU has three All-Americans in a single event at the indoor championships.
The ESU women tied for 23rd in the team standings. Senior Jonel Rossbach ran 17:16.91 to earn All-American honors with a sixth-place finish in the 5000m. Read more
