Lady Hornets building momentum, Stueve becomes all-time leading MIAA scorer

Lady Hornet All-American Michelle Stueve scored a game-high 27 points to become the MIAA’s all-time scoring leader as #22 Emporia State defeated Northwest Missouri 86-67 on Thursday night in White Auditorium. Stueve tied Becky Reichard’s career record of 2,160 points on a jumper with 5:59 left and broke the record 51 seconds later on a lay-up to give ESU a 17-point lead.

The Lady Hornets, the hottest team in the MIAA, sitting in first place at the midway point, beat Fort Hays State on Saturday in Emporia, 77-64. Michelle Stueve scored 22 points, Ida Edwards added a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Andrea Leiker chipped in 20 points.

Do those outstanding numbers sound fairly routine for the Lady Hornets? Consider this: Along with Stueve’s record-breaking points, Ida Edwards has become the fourth Lady Hornet to be named MIAA player of the week this season – and it’s believed to be the first time in league history that a school has had four different players earn the honor in the same season.

The women moved up two spots to #22 in the latest USA Today/ESPN/WBCA Top 25, marking the 67th straight week and 137th week overall that ESU has been in the top 25, stretching back to the 1997-98 preseason poll.

ESU men fall in double OT after a streak of wins

The Hornets fell for the first time in four games as Northwest Missouri knocked them off 91-83 in double overtime on Thursday night. DeAndre Townsend scored 30 points for the third time this season while Andrew Davison scored 14 and Dustin Andrews added 11 points. The Hornets appeared to win the game in regulation as Andrew Davison appeared to hit a shot with 0:02 second remaining, but the shot was overturned after looking at the replay.

On Saturday, the men converted six of eight free throws in the final 1:24 to hold off Fort Hays State, 67-60, in White Auditorium on Saturday night. Caleb Tegtmeier led all scorers with 20 points while DeAndre Townsend added 19 points and five assists. Jordan Fithian added 12 points for the Hornets and added a game-high seven rebounds.

On Jan. 30, the men went to Maryville, Mo., and won for the first time since 1997. Andrew Davison scored a game-high 20 points including the game-winning three-pointer with 11.2 seconds left as the Hornets defeated Northwest Missouri, 65-62.

On the academic side…

Meanwhile, two ESU players are outclassing their competition in the classroom. Michelle Stueve and Wes Book were both named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).  Stueve was a first-team selection on the women’s team and Book earned second-team honors.

Stueve, averaging 21.3 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Lady Hornets, has a 3.58 GPA in biology. Book, with a 3.58 GPA in physical education, averages 15.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, but has been sidelined the last four games with a foot injury.

Football program inks 29 recruits on first day of signing period

ESU football coach Garin Higgins announced this week the signing of 28 high school players and one transfer to attend ESU and play football for the Hornets.

“We are really pleased with this class,” said Higgins. “It’s the first time we were able to get out as a staff for the entire recruiting process. That made it easier to focus on addressing our needs.”

“Recruiting will not end today,” added Higgins. “We will continue to look for a few players - sometimes you find some hidden gems after signing date.”
