Spotlight is on the way!

The winter 2008 edition of your alumni magazine, the Spotlight, is on its way! It’ll start hitting mailboxes this week, depending on your address. Meanwhile, the web pages and a new host of online enhancements for the magazine’s stories are under construction at www.emporia.edu/spotlight. Take a peek!

A quick look at the major stories starts off with the cover story, titled “Universities and War,” looking at the role universities play during times of war. The three-part story covers a historical look at ESU during war, considers the question of apathy, and tells the story through an alumni couple.

Another interesting topic is the grieving process endured by ESU alumni in Greensburg, Kan., who lost everything in a May tornado. There’s also a story on a civil rights legend coming to campus for the annual Bonner and Bonner Diversity Series Lecture, completed online with a series of quotes from her on a variety of subjects. You’ll also enjoy a look at the Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professors and the 2007 class of Distinguished Alumni.

ESU alumni win statewide blood drive

Of the five university alumni associations in Kansas that participated in a two-month blood drive challenge, there is one alumni association sitting atop all the rest.

Yours.

That’s right – Emporia State beat Kansas State, Pittsburg State, Kansas, and Wichita State, tallying the highest percentage of alumni giving blood during the American Red Cross challenge in November and December.

The Red Cross is delivering a trophy to ESU later this month, so we’ll have that on hand… and we’ll also have the bragging rights for a year! Congratulations, ESU alumni!

ESU glassblowers dominate category

The artwork of four ESU students is winning critical recognition. The students dominate a competition category in the 2008 NICHE Student Awards. Five entries by the four students, Tanner Scott Clark, Jesse England, Sarah Sparks and Megan Stelljes, are among the nine finalists in the functional glass category for student artists. Read more, and find a link for viewing their artwork, at http://www.emporia.edu/news/glassblowers.htm.

SPORTS

The men’s and women’s basketball teams are heading into their first showdown with Washburn at the Civic Auditorium in Emporia on Wednesday, with games slated for 5:30 and 7:30.

A holiday recap for the #16 women (8-3, 1-1 MIAA) is marked by a few losses. They fell Jan. 5 to Southwest Baptist, 76-73, after beating #23 Shaw, 93-86, in Hawaii at the Hoop’n’Surf Classic.

The men (5-6, 0-2 MIAA) are looking to rebound from a tough holiday break. They fell Jan. 5 to Southwest Baptist, a team that hit 12 three-pointers in the first half, after falling to Fort Hays State, 79-77, in their MIAA opener. On Dec. 20, the men dropped a four-overtime game to Midwestern State, 127-124, when four of their five starters were out of the game.
