ESU brings home trophy for statewide blood drive
Your alma mater held its early lead in the statewide American Red Cross blood drive, besting four other regent universities to win the first annual traveling trophy. ESU alumni
– thanks to you – by percentage of total alumni donated more blood than any other university! Congratulations!

ESU instructor named Kansas Master Teacher
Kenna Reeves, an ESU instructor, has been named a Kansas Master Teacher for 2008, along with six other winning teachers: Alice Bertels, Washburn Rural Middle School; Lisa Colwell, Hays High School; Lori Goodson, Wamego High School; Ronda Hassig, Harmony Middle School, Blue Valley; Deborah Nauerth, at the Amanda Arnold, Bluemont, and Lee Elementary Schools in Manhattan-Ogden School District; and Shannon Ralph, Dodge City High School.
The winners will receive their awards during a dinner on Feb. 27, after a day of activities in their honor on campus.
Reeves has been an instructor in the communications department at ESU for more than 20 years. She previously taught at Emporia, Chase County, El Dorado and Wabaunsee high schools. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ESU.
She co-chairs the ESU Strategic Planning Task Force, is a member of the academic
review university-wide committee, and has been recognized for her abilities as an academic advisor. Reeves was Educator of the Year in 2003, received the Xi Phi Outstanding Faculty Award in 2001 for overall commitment, the “Make a Difference” award in 1998, and the Outstanding Advisor Award from the National Academic Advising Association in 1994.
The Kansas Master Teacher Award will celebrate its 55th anniversary this year. ESU has

Annual scholarship drive kicks off Feb. 6
The grand opening of Scholarbucks Café – the annual opportunity for faculty and staff to support ESU students through scholarships – is slated for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6, on Memorial Union’s Main Street. Come join us for coffee and treats as we kick off the annual scholarship drive!
As the weather gets warmer, you might have exercise on your mind. Mark your calendars for the third annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk, at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 19, on the ESU campus. Sponsored by Barnhart Builders, the annual event raises funds for ESU’s general scholarship fund. The planning is under way now for a 5K run and a 2-mile walk, followed by a reception at the Sauder Alumni Center.

President Lane outlines accomplishments, challenges in spring general assembly remarks
Midway through a school year marked by history-making monetary gifts and news-making recognition of its programs, Emporia State University continues its focus on preparing students for fulfilling careers. In remarks delivered at the spring general assembly on Tuesday, Dr. Michael R. Lane, president, reviewed accomplishments and unveiled plans to reorganize some administrative functions.
“Strategic planning is progressing well,” said Lane. “The work groups are addressing the critical issues of the future of ESU.” A task force will work this spring on formulating goals and initiatives as part of the strategic planning process, and plans to have the plan in operation this summer. Lane also outlined plans to realign some administrative functions on campus.

Community Chorus seeks new members
Broadway favorites, folk songs, and a composition by an ESU graduate are part of the repertoire for ESU’s Community Chorus this spring. Dr. Terry Barham, conductor, encourages anyone interested to attend rehearsals. No audition is required. The first rehearsal is from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 in Beach Music Hall, room 132. ESU receives grant to help teachers enhance English language learning
Emporia State University is utilizing a U. S. Department of Education grant to help teachers in six Kansas school districts improve the English language skills of their students. The $1.4 million grant will fund a five-year Project Estrellas program in USD 206-Remington, USD 260-Derby, USD 385-Andover, USD 465-Winfield, USD 470-Arkansas City, and USD 490-El Dorado. Basketballers pick up wins at UCM
The Hornet men came back from an early 18-4 deficit to defeat Central Missouri 84-75 in overtime on Jan. 19 at the UCM Multipurpose Building, snapping the Mules’ 31-game home-court winning streak.
DeAndre Townsend scored 24 points, with 17 coming after halftime, to lead five Hornets in double figures. The MIAA scoring and assist leader also added seven assists on the afternoon. Marvin Lee had 18 points and six boards for ESU. Doug Moore had a career high four blocked shots, all in the first half for the Hornets. The men are now 8-7 on the year, evening their MIAA record at 3-3.
The ESU women shot .535 from the field and connected on 11 of 22 three-pointers to overcome 29 turnovers in a 73-63 win at Central Missouri on Jan. 19. Michelle Stueve led ESU with 18 points, five assists and five rebounds while Ida Edwards scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half for ESU. Stueve’s points pushed her into fifth place in MIAA career scoring. She’s now 105 points behind behind Becky Reichard for the MIAA career scoring record.
Both teams travel to Joplin, Mo., to take on Missouri Southern tonight.
Track and field continues to shine
Brooke Kent finished third in the long jump and also had top-five finishes in the 60m and 200m for the Emporia State women at the KSU Wildcat Invitational on Jan. 19. ESU had six top-three finishes for the women after capturing ten top three finishes by the men last Friday in Manhattan.
“I was just glad to see the team back in action,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “When you look at it we have been off competition since the first weekend in December, I suspect the individuals on our team will show the greatest improvement in the next three to four weeks.”
Linzi Weilert had the top place for ESU, finishing second in the shot put. Jaclyn Sill was third in the 600 yard run while Kathryn Davison placed third in the 800m and Chastity Hughes-Stanton was third in the 400m. The women’s 1600m relay team also placed third for ESU on the track.
Josh Schuler and Doug Marshall each won individual championships while Damon Birk picked up a provisional qualifier for Emporia State on Friday at the KSU Wildcat Invitational.
