Football and alumni at Fort Hays State
We scolded the weatherman about Saturday’s frigid football home opener versus Southwest Baptist, and he’s promised better weather for this Saturday in Hays, when ESU takes a 3-0 record to Fort Hays State University. Your alumni association is hosting a pre-game event from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, at the home of Tim and Sandee Werth in Hays. If you’d like to attend, please RSVP as soon as possible to Joan at (620) 341-5440, or jlauber@emporia.edu. See you there!
Bonner and Bonner speaker a great success
We spent an amazing two days last week with Minnijean Brown Trickey, the fall 2007 speaker for the Bonner and Bonner Diversity Lecture Series. Ms. Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine who desegregated Central High School in 1957, spoke on Sept. 12 and visited with students on Sept. 13.
Next week, tune in to the national networks and you’ll probably see her. On Sept. 25, the nation will mark the 50th anniversary of the Little Rock Nine with numerous events in the Arkansas city. Learn more online at http://www.emporia.edu/bonner/. You’ll find a story about Kansas’s role in civil rights, another story about civil rights yesterday and today, a video clip of ESU representatives on a Topeka television station, and a student’s poem titled “little rocks” that brought tears to the eyes of Ms. Brown Trickey.
