Student elected to national board |
Homecoming 2007 – First off, watch your mailboxes in the next few weeks for the very first print edition of the Hornet News Update. You’ll find your 2007 Homecoming schedule and invitation, along with previews of the football season and the Homecoming musical. Kansas State Fair – Our annual appearance at the state fair kicks off on Friday, Sept. 7, with the Fan Fair alumni event in Hutchinson. We’re also manning an ESU booth every day from Sept. 7 to Sept. 16, and volunteers are welcome any day. Several time slots still need volunteers: from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9 and Saturday, Sept. 15; from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sept. 9, Sept. 10, and Sept. 12; and 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sept. 15. Bonner and Bonner Lecture – Hear Minnijean Brown Trickey, a member of the Little Rock Nine, describe the experience of desegregating Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., exactly 50 years ago. This intriguing installment of the Bonner and Bonner Diversity Lecture Series is slated for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Plumb Hall’s Albert Taylor Hall. Read more at www.emporia.edu/bonner. Rep. Jerry Moran announces NTHF funding effort

The nation’s only museum dedicated to recognizing career teachers is in line to receive
federal aid to promote its mission. Rep. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) announced $150,000 in funding for the National Teachers Hall of Fame at a news conference Friday, Aug. 17 at
the hall of fame’s museum in Visser Hall at ESU. The funding will be used for program activities to further the mission and vision of the Hall of Fame, including reaching out to early career teachers and hosting teaching academies for future teachers.

They’re back!

Corky the Hornet leads the way as ESU student leaders escort freshmen and new students to Albert Taylor Hall for the convocation on Aug. 11, signifying their transition as college students. It’s become a fall semester tradition at Emporia State University. With faculty and staff applauding from the sidewalk, freshmen and new students walk from the Sunken Garden in front of Plumb Hall to be welcomed into the ranks of higher education at ESU. Top
Student elected to national board of directors
Todd Roberts, a senior elementary education major, was elected to the board of
directors for the National Education Association Student Program. Roberts has been active in the organization for four years, and was elected to the national post in June. “I wanted to be more involved and have more of an impact on NEA,” he said. “Being on the [board] is just a natural progression for me; it is the next level for me.” Read more at http://www.emporia.edu/news/toddroberts.htm. ESU alumnae receives national award
Tristen Wendland, a 2000 Emporia State University graduate from the mental health

ESU volleyball opens season with wins
Emporia State moved to 4-0 on the season with wins over Central Oklahoma and Angelo State at the MSSU Invitational. Amy Byfield and Megan Koster were named to the all-tournament team. After a thrilling come-from-behind win against Mo.-St. Louis, Emporia State came back with a quick 3-0 win over Drury on Friday. Top
Soccer team opens at home tomorrow
The Emporia State soccer team will host Newman University at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the
TRYSA Complex in Emporia, where the Hornets boast a record of 28-20-5, all time. Come out and cheer them on! Top
