What color do you bleed?

Of the five universities in Kansas participating in a blood drive challenge, there is one alumni association sitting atop all the rest.

Yours.

That’s right – Emporia State is currently ahead of K-State in second place, followed by Pittsburg State, Kansas, and Wichita State, with the highest percentage of alumni giving blood during the challenge. And there’s still time to become part of the American Red Cross challenge and its lifesaving endeavor – it lasts until Dec. 31. The alumni association with the highest percentage at the end of the year will receive a trophy, not to mention bragging rights.

Vote for ESU by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule your appointment at a blood drive near you. Click here to download a ballot, and help ESU bring home the trophy!

Hornets fall, Townsend named MIAA player of the week

The #7 Hornets fell to #22 Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday as the Mavericks utilized runs of 10 or more in both frames to defend their home court and pull out a 105-91 victory on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Hornets’ DeAndre Townsend – who scored 39 points in Omaha – was named the MIAA men’s basketball player of the week after averaging 31.5 points per game against Newman and Nebraska-Omaha.

Unfortunately, the men fell to Newman University at home last Wednesday as Newman dropped in 17 three-pointers en-route. The Hornets pushed the game to overtime despite a 7-point deficit in the final minute and a two-technical ejection of coach David Moe, but Newman hit six of six free throws in overtime to hand ESU its first loss of the season.

Lady Hornets lose rare non-conference home game

The #7 Emporia State Lady Hornets fell at home in a non-conference game for the first time since 1995, in a 58-51 loss on Saturday to NAIA #23 Harris-Stowe. The 51 points are the fewest scored by ESU since falling to Washburn 63-51 in the 2005 NCAA Division II South Central Regional Championship game.

Michelle Stueve led ESU with 19 points and 12 rebounds while Allie Renberg had her first career double-double with 10 points and ten rebounds. ESU played without starting point guard Cassondra Boston, who is out with an ankle injury.

ESU picks up four championships and national qualifying marks track meets

Emporia State track and field athletes won four event championships and had a provisional qualifier at the KSU Allcomers and ISU Cyclone Holiday Preview meets on Saturday.

Damon Birk, a senior from Gridley, won the shot put by nearly eight inches over 2003 World Outdoor Decathlon Champion Tom Pappas at the KSU Allcomers Meet. His mark of 53-10.50 is an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark. The other win in Manhattan came from Josh Honeycutt, an Iola freshman, in the long jump. He jumped 22-07.75 in his first collegiate meet. Jaclyn Sill, a senior from Wichita, and Skyler Delmott, an Emporia sophomore, both picked up wins at the ISU Cyclone Holiday Preview in Ames, Iowa. Sill ran a 58.12 in the women’s 400m run while Delmott won the men’s 3000m in 8:52.58.

Meanwhile, the high jump portion of the KSU Carol Robinson Pentathlon was especially kind to Emporia State on Friday. ESU’s Craig Saalfeld and Jennifer Robinson both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in the high jump in Manhattan on Friday. Saalfeld went 6-09 in the high jump, the fourth of five events for the men. Robinson high jumped 5-06.5 in the second of five events for the women, notching the third best indoor high jump in ESU women’s track and field history.
