Teaching honors go to two from ESU
The two Kansas winners of the prestigious Milken Education Award are Emporia State University degree-holders. Jamelle McConnell-Brown, a forensics coach and speech teacher at Sumner Academy, and Eric Kessler, a biology and zoology teacher from Blue Valley North High School, were surprised by the awards presented during assemblies at their respective schools in late October. France awards ESU grad teaching honor
When Alain-Philippe Durand arrived on the Emporia State University campus in 1988, he was ESU’s only student from France. Now, 15 years after earning his bachelor’s degree at Emporia State, Durand has attained another measure of celebrity. An associate professor at the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Alain-Philippe Durand has been awarded France’s highest teaching honor, the Palmes Académiques, for his distinguished service to French education. ESU professor’s work accepted into international academy
A body of work that draws its inspiration from a trip to China has won acclaim for a member of Emporia State University’s art faculty. Elaine Henry, associate professor of art and chair of ESU’s art department, received notification that her porcelain sculptures have earned her acceptance into the International Academy of Ceramics. Two talented professionals join Advancement team
The Advancement office at Emporia State University is delighted to announce two new members of the development staff, Mike Crouch and Blake Davis.

Mike Crouch began in early November as a development officer. The Emporia native earned his bachelor’s degree from ESU in 2004. Blake Davis started in early October as the associate director of annual programs. Davis graduated from high school in Smith Center, Kan., and from the University of Kansas. Read more

Piano students from Emporia State University won the top two places at a state collegiate piano competition on Nov. 10-11 in Wichita. At the event, sponsored by the Kansas Music Teachers Association, Angel Yang won first place in the graduate division and Feifei Jiang took second place in the same division. They are both graduate piano performance majors at ESU, and come from Dalian, China.
Team from ESU creates prizewinning instructional design solution
A solution for a fictional logging and paper production company's real-life problem has
netted honors for two Emporia State University students. Sandra Valenti and Steven Harmon, both students in the Instructional Design and Technology master's degree program at ESU, are two of the six finalists in this year’s Association for Educational Communication and Technology (AECT) / PacifiCorp competition in Anaheim, Calif. ESU readies for 2007 winter commencement
Caps and gowns, speeches, diplomas and proud relatives will fill Emporia’s William Lindsay White Auditorium Saturday, Dec. 15. ESU will confer undergraduate degrees on approximately 265 students, and anoher 168 students are candidates for graduate degrees. This year’s Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor, Dr. Elizabeth (Betsy) Yanik, will deliver the commencement address. Read more
ESU debate squad continues impressive season
The Emporia State University debate squad has continued its streak of great competition and winning results. All members of the team have cleared in varsity level at one tournament and have won at least one out round as well. Read more
Sebelius appoints ESU grad
Governor Kathleen Sebelius has appointed ESU alumna Latoria Chinn to the Kansas African-American Affairs Commission (KAAAC). Read more

#10 Hornets are 4-0 to start the season
The ESU men are off to a 4-0 start this basketball season, with its latest win coming against Ottawa University on Monday night. In the second-best defensive effort of the David Moe era, the Hornets beat the Braves, 77-43. Wes Book led all scorers with 22 points, 13 of which came in the first half. In the first three games, ESU defeated Midwestern State, 85-83; Friends, 91-66; and Eastern New Mexico, 89-73. Read more on Hornet basketball.
#7 Lady Hornets drop first game, Stueve is player of the week
The women started 3-0 before falling to Central Oklahoma on Saturday, 71-66. Meanwhile, two-time All-American Michelle Stueve was named the MIAA player of the week after averaging 25.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game last week. In previous contests, the Lady Hornets defeated Cameron, 80-60, in Lawton, Okla., and earlier in Emporia, 81-63; and Texas Woman’s University, 83-67. Read more on the Lady Hornets.
Volleyball team caps off successful season
The #16 Hornet volleyball team ended their tremendous season with a loss to #4 Truman State University in the South Central Region’s semifinals. Sophomore Arica Shepard was named honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA), the first AVCA All-American for ESU since Shelly Slavens in 1991. Cross country’s Rossbach shines, once again
ESU senior Jonel Rossbach earned All-American honors for the second straight year with a fourth place finish at the NCAA D-II National Championships in Joplin, Mo. She finished second in the South Central Regional race, where the ESU men’s team finished fifth, led by Skyler Delmott’s 14th-place finish. Read more cross country news.
