ESU names four Distinguished Alumni at Homecoming

Another Homecoming has come and gone, and what a wonderful weekend it was! A major highlight was the Class of 1957’s 50-year reunion. The attendance – at more than 100 alumni – was a record for our 50-year reunions. The group even established the Class of 1957 Scholarship by joining in a $10,000 gift!

The Distinguished Alumni banquet was also praiseworthy, as it featured four of ESU’s most accomplished alumni. Adding in the 2007 class, 200 alumni have now been honored as Distinguished Alumni since the award’s inception.

This year’s four recipients are (from left) Herb B. Kuhn, Springfield, Va.; Donna Clopton, Amarillo, Texas; Dr. Karen Kelly, Prairie Village, Kan.; and Victor Spinski, Newark, Del.  Read more about the award and recipients by clicking here.

What color do you bleed?

Five regent universities in Kansas have come together to help the American Red Cross

save lives. The American Red Cross Central Plains Region needs nearly 20,000 pints of blood during November and December to meet the needs of hospital patients. You can become part of this lifesaving endeavor by giving blood and voting for your university.

The university alumni association with the highest percentage of blood donors

across Kansas will receive a trophy and bragging rights for the entire year. Vote for Emporia State University by donating blood from Nov. 1 to Dec. 31. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule your appointment at a blood drive near you.

Math students compete at ESU

For about 700 students from nearly 50 Kansas high schools, the competitive focus was on algebra, geometry, math and computer programming problem solving. Even so, there were parents cheering and taking photos from the sidelines of the Donald L. Bruyr Students at Donald L. Bruyr Mathematics Day competition at ESUMathematics Day competition at ESU on Wednesday, Oct. 24.

“Math usually isn’t a spectator sport,” said Dr. Connie Schrock, an ESU professor of mathematics, computer science and economics. In her 20th year organizing the event, Schrock said it encourages students to enjoy math.

ESU student adds scholarship to accomplishments

Stories of students who’ve financed their college education with scholarships and part-time jobs are admittedly routine. But there is nothing commonplace about Andrea Luthi’s experience at Emporia State University. A triple-major student, Luthi will earn bachelor of science degrees in biology and chemistry, and a bachelor of arts degree in Spanish.

The daughter of Jay and Jane Luthi of Madison, Luthi received the Peterson-Bruekelman Scholarship during a reception on campus last week. The $500 scholarship is presented to deserving students in ESU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Read more here.

ESU's Rossbach repeats as MIAA champion

Emporia State’s Jonel Rossbach became the ninth woman to win two MIAA individual Jonel Rossbachcross country championships on Saturday in Kirksville, Mo. Skyler Delmott earned All-MIAA honors with his seventh place finish to lead the ESU men to a fourth-place finish in the team standings.

Rossbach won her second championship in convincing fashion. Her time of 22:06.65 was nearly 36 seconds in front of the second place finisher. “It was a great run by Jonel to win her second consecutive MIAA individual championship,” said ESU head coach Dave Harris. “She was in control the whole way. She chose not to lead until just past the halfway mark and then pulled away.”
