Bonner and Bonner lecture set for Wednesday

ESU representatives appearing on Topeka television Tuesday

Emporia State University is thrilled to host Minnijean Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine, as the speaker at the Bonner and Bonner Diversity Series Lecture. Ms. Brown Trickey will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, in Albert Taylor Hall. Her speech, “Return to Little Rock,” is quite timely – the 50th anniversary is Sept. 25, when she and eight other African-American students desegregated the all-white Central High School.

If you’re in an area of Kansas that receives Topeka television stations, tune into 49 ABC News, KTKA, early on Tuesday morning. Dr. Barbara Baker, the ESU director of multicultural affairs, and an ESU student will appear on the morning show, sometime between 6:10 and 6:50 a.m., to talk about the Bonner lecture. We’ll have the clip posted online later in the day.

Another exciting note: in the state of Kansas, September has been declared “Equality in Education” month. Gov. Kathleen Sebelius signed the statewide declaration in honor of Minnijean Brown Trickey and the Little Rock Nine. The city of Emporia made a similar declaration for the month, calling it “Equality in Education and Little Rock Nine Month.”

Read more about the lecture and the speaker at www.emporia.edu/bonner. We’ve included some neat online extras:

-- An interview with Diane Good, an ESU alumna who wrote a book on the Brown vs. Board of Education case

-- A poem inspired by the Little Rock Nine, by senior David Muhammad, who is also a student Ambassador

-- Interviews with ESU experts about the civil rights movement’s past and present

-- A video from 49 ABC News, featuring Dr. Barbara Baker, director of multicultural affairs, and student Lorene Booth, talking about the event
