Leading by example at ESU, Lanes start scholarship

Motivated by the “sense of awe” they have seen in students who experience other cultures, President Michael Lane and Dr. Peggy Lane have created a new scholarship program for student leaders at Emporia State University.

The Presidential Leadership Program is slated to begin in the fall of 2008, assuming sufficient additional funds are raised, with a class of 10 incoming freshmen who have graduated from Kansas high schools with records of academic excellence and leadership.

The LanesThe Lanes will travel with the new students and a faculty member, preferably going overseas, before classes begin in the students’ freshmen year, and then oversee a year-long leadership training program for the students. Each student will receive a $1,000 scholarship for the year. Read more by clicking here.

National Teachers Hall of Fame announces five inductees

Five teachers from Washington to Florida recently found out they’ve been selected for induction into The National Teachers Hall of Fame in a series of surprise announcements.

This year’s class includes Norman Dale Conard, Uniontown, Kan.; Edna Loveday Rogers, Sevierville, Tenn.; Geri Rohlff, Auburn, Wash.; John Snyder, Las Vegas, Nev.; and Dr. Joseph W. Underwood, Davie, Fla.

The selected teachers will be in Emporia June 14-16 for a series of induction events, including the annual performance by the NTHF Honor Choir, comprised this year of 117 singers from 20 middle and junior high schools in Kansas. The choir will perform at 7:30 p.m., Friday, June 15, in Albert Taylor Hall. Click here for more on the choir and a list of its 2007 singers.

The hall was founded in Emporia in 1989 to honor elementary and secondary teachers, and the teaching profession through a recognition program and museum.

Yanik named Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor

An accomplished professor, mentor and scholar is the 2007 Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor. Betsy Yanik, a passionate teacher who directs and sustains a half-dozen math and science mentoring programs for young women, was honored during a reception.

Yanik was in total shock when she first learned of the award. “I was sitting in my office after teaching two classes and I saw both President Lane and Vice President Schwenn enter the front door of the math office. A minute later they appeared at my office door. I had no idea why they would be visiting me. Then Vice President Schwenn told me I had been named this year’s Roe R. Cross professor. I was stunned – totally shocked. I didn’t even know I had been nominated. I am so very honored to join this group of distinguished professors,” she said. Read more by clicking here.
