ESU Facilities’ hot dogs and prizes raise money for scholarships

The annual hot dog feed and prize drawing held by University Facilities on Friday raised $2,234 for student scholarships. The money will be split between the Classified Personnel Dependent/Child Scholarship and the Presidential Academic Awards Scholarship program.

“University Facilities wishes to thank all those who participated and donated in this fund raiser,” said Mark Runge, director of facilities. “The results far exceeded our expectations, which only does more for our students. We are glad that we were able to provide this opportunity to the campus community to show support for current and future ESU students. Thanks again to everyone.”

The employees organize the annual event, and more people are attending each year. A little money goes a long way at the event – one dollar buys lunch, and it also buys a ticket for the drawing. More than 100 prizes were donated by area businesses, and Friday’s drawing sent many home for the weekend with a smile. Between the lunch and the drawing, 100 percent of University Facilities staff participated in the 2007 scholarship drive.

Commencement here, Homecoming on tapCommencement is slated for May 12

It’s easy for us to get excited about commencement here at Emporia State, what with the  hundreds of graduates ready to jump into a world of possibilities. The caps and gowns will cross the stage this Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at Welch Stadium. In case of inclement weather – or, rather, in case of springtime in Kansas – the ceremony will move indoors. Undergraduates will receive degrees at White Auditorium and graduates will walk the walk at Albert Taylor Hall in Plumb Hall. For more details, visit www.emporia.edu/commencement.

While you’ve got your calendars out, pencil in a trip to Emporia for Homecoming 2007, on Oct. 20. Save the date, and join us for the reunion! This year’s theme will play off the Homecoming musical, “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Educators learn strategies to help students in poverty

Discipline in disadvantaged students was the topic of a recent workshop held at ESU. Nearly 30 educators attended “Developing Self-Discipline with Children from Poverty” on April 27, organized by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence. A previous workshop was held April 13, and due to high demand from educators, the workshop was offered again.

“As districts’ demographics are changing, administrators and educators are looking for more information on how to handle the diversity of students, especially those from poverty,” said Carol Hailey, workshop presenter. “Discipline for students from poverty and for students from middle class looks very different. The idea of discipline to instruct and change behavior is not part of the culture of poverty.”

Hailey has taught middle and high school English for over 30 years. She is currently the K-12 reading/language arts resource specialist for Shawnee Mission USD 512. Hailey conducts staff development for the district, assists schools in developing school improvement and AYP plans, and serves on school improvement teams. The workshop was based on the work of Dr. Ruby Payne. Read more by clicking here.
