Educators tune in to music for teaching
More than 30 educators from across the state recently learned how to enhance their language arts teaching through the use of music, at a workshop organized by the Jones Institute for Educational Excellence.
The “Reading & Writing ‘With a Little Help from’ Contemporary Music” workshop was held May 4. Participants learned that popular music can be utilized to enhance students’ skills in the following areas:
- making intertextual connections to classroom texts,
- providing a purpose for reading,
- developing a deeper understanding of basic literary elements: plot, characterization, theme, setting, and point of view,
- comprehending classic literary terms through music lyrics,
- using the writing process to produce effective communication, and
- enhancing personal, biographical writing.

For the first time in school history, all 10 of Emporia State’s spring athletic programs advanced to NCAA postseason competition! Emporia State and Grand Valley State are the only NCAA D-II schools in the nation to send their men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball, and baseball teams, and representatives of their men and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams, to NCAA postseason competition this year.
Baseball team falls in NCAA Central Regional
The Hornets baseball team, champions of the MIAA tournament, fell to league rival Central Missouri State in the NCAA tournament, ending the season at 41-24. Against Minnesota State-Mankato, the Hornets had clawed their way back from a 6-0 deficit to win, 8-7, and reach the CMSU contest.
Two players earned recognition on the Rawlings/ABCA All-Central Region second team:
Keith Hernandez and Mark McBratney. Hernandez led the MIAA in RBI and was named a second team All-MIAA player this season. McBratney was a first team All-MIAA selection and is now 10th all time for the Hornets in career homers as well as finishing fifth in career triples.
Softball team falls in regional championship
The ESU softball team, coming off last season’s run to the national championship game, couldn’t overcome a four-run second inning by Nebraska-Omaha and fell in the regional championship game on May 13. ESU ended the season 50-12, marking the third straight season the Hornets have reached the 50-win mark. The Hornet senior class ended their careers 209-51 over the last four years.
Megan Davison and Courtney Reed were named second-team Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans – the second straight year for Davison and the first for Reed. Davison ended her illustrious career with the Hornets as the MIAA’s all-time leader in hits, home runs and RBI. Reed set the MIAA record for best career winning percentage, going 79-15 in her career.
ESU track and field athletes qualify for national championship
The Hornet track and field teams each qualified athletes for the national championships this week in Charlotte, N.C.
The high qualifier for the men was the javelin’s defending national champion, Andy Vogelsberg, who qualified in first place in the event, along with Tyson Allen, who qualified in eighth place. The Hornets also got two in the shot put and discus throws as Trent Olivier and Damon Birk both qualified in each event. Olivier also qualified in 19th position in the hammer throw. The final qualifier for the men’s squad was Craig Saalfield, landing 11th in the high jump.
For the women Jonel Rossbach was the high qualifier, at ninth position in the 1500m run. Also qualifying were Kara Euler and Jaclyn Sill in the 400m run, and the women’s 4 x 400m relay team consisting of Euler, Sill, Rossbach and Danielle Sedivy.
