Senior Week: Catch It If You Can!
Senior Week, the annual extravaganza for Emporia State University’s graduating seniors, features a BBQ at the president’s house, the awards dinner for Outstanding Seniors and Recent Graduates, and much more.
Events from April 23 to 26, with a theme of “Catch Me If You Can,” will honor hundreds of graduates ahead of the May 12 spring commencement. The week kicks off with the awards banquet for seniors and recent graduates, at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Memorial Union Ballroom. The public is invited to attend; RSVP to the alumni office at (620) 341-5440 or sacpc@emporia.edu. The cost for dinner is $8.25.
Seventeen seniors are nominated for the Newberg Outstanding Senior and Distinguished Senior awards, named in honor of Dwight (BSE 1933) and Ida Curry Newberg (LC 1932). Dwight received the Outstanding Senior award in 1933. The top two seniors will be announced at the banquet.
The 2007 class of Outstanding Recent Graduates includes Rob Curley (BIS 2001), Jeff Johnson (BSB 1997, MBA 1999), and Michelle Moore (BSE 1996).
• Curley is the vice president of product development at WashingtonPost.Newsweek Interactive in Alexandria, Va.
• Johnson is a tax manager and CPA for the Deloitte and Touche accounting firm in Kansas City, Mo.
• Moore is the director of training for the public school district in Winfield, Kan.

- Monday, April 23 - 6:30 p.m., Newberg Outstanding Senior and Recent Graduate banquet, MU Ballroom.
- Tuesday, April 24 - 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Emporia State Federal Credit Union Luncheon, Sauder Alumni Center. Lunch, games, entertainment, door prizes, and job-hunting advice from ESU Career Services.
- Wednesday, April 25 - Senior Day on the Town. Discounts at area businesses.
- Thursday, April 26 - 5 to 7 p.m., Senior BBQ at the president’s house, hosted by President Michael and Dr. Peggy Lane. Dinner and prizes.
- Thursday, April 26 - 9 to 11 p.m., Senior Street Dance and Block Party, Merchant Street and 7th Avenue. Bring your lawn chairs to tailgate amid music, games and prizes.

Inauguration ends with a grand celebration

Internet pioneer speaks at alma mater
Rob Curley (BIS 2001), a pioneer of interactive, content-rich news websites, delivered three presentations Friday as the 2007 Entrepreneurial Distinguished Lecturer at the School of Business. Rob, sought after the world over for his dynamic presentations, is the vice president of product development at Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive. Read more about Rob’s career.
Annual research and creativity forum on Thursday, awards planned
The annual Research and Creativity Forum, highlighting the range of intellectual discovery our faculty and students are engaged in, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Memorial Union Ballroom. The forum features posters displaying research and scholarly work, and the presentation of various awards.
The awards ceremony will begin at 3:15. Winners of the Audrey S. Major awards for faculty research materials, the Boylan graduate student awards, the Graduate Teaching Assistant University Awards for Excellent Teaching, and the Harold Durst Graduate Research Award, will be announced.
The 2007 recipient of the President’s Award for Research and Creativity, Dr. Scott Crupper, will end the event with his keynote address, “Antibiotics, Anti-Cancer Drugs, and Other Useful Things.” Crupper is an associate professor in the department of biological sciences.
Graduate student Andrea Mott will be honored at the forum as the Laurence C. Boylan Scholar for 2007-08. In addition, Ryan Diehl, Ali Nashatizadeh, and Amanda Ruble will be honored with Graduate Teaching Assistant University Awards for Excellent Teaching.
Wolf Creek nuclear plant donates server computers to ESU
The donation of six server computers from the Wolf Creek nuclear plant will offer ESU students access to the advanced computer systems used in today’s business world. Read more online.
ESU track and field gets three qualified
Emporia State had two provisionals and one automatic qualifier at the Euler State Farm/ESU Relays on Monday at Welch Stadium and the Zola Witten Track. Defending national champion Andy Vogelsberg had an automatic mark in the javelin of 228-04 to win the event. His was one of 11 event championships for ESU on the day. Freshmen Derius Garner and Jennifer Robinson picked up a pair of individual championships for ESU. Garner won the men’s 200m and 400m while Robinson picked up championships in the high jump and triple jump.
The Hornets are back in Welch Stadium/Witten Track this weekend as they play host to the Papa John’s D-II Challenge. Close to 20 D-II schools and nearly 800 athletes will be in Emporia for the only scored home meet of the season. Action begins on Thursday with the multi-events and the majority of the meet will take place on Saturday, April 14.
Baseball team sweeps Sunday doubleheader
The Hornet baseball team won both games of Sunday’s doubleheader against Missouri Southern in walk off fashion, winning 7-6 on Brian Major’s bases-loaded drag bunt and 5-3 on a Keith Hernandez three-run homer. In game one Mark McBratney was 2-of-4 with three RBI as Daniel Waggoner came on and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings for the win. In game two the Hornets trailed 3-2 going into the seventh and final inning, before Hernandez hit a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence. Grant Meisenheimer went all seven innings to earn his second victory of the season. The Hornets will face Pittsburg State in a single nine-inning game at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in Emporia.
Tennis teams notch wins
The ESU women’s tennis team won two MIAA duals on Friday in Joplin, Mo., while the Hornet men won an exhibition dual in Joplin. Due to playing on a limited number of indoor courts, the duals were ended as soon as a team clinched the win.
The women defeated Missouri Southern 5-1 and downed Southwest Baptist 6-1, running their record to 10-2 overall and 5-1 in MIAA play. They are leading FHSU 4-0 in a March 30 match that was suspended due to rain, and will be made up on April 20. The men won an exhibition match 5-1 against Arkansas-Ft. Smith, in Joplin.
