Inauguration week is here!

A weeklong celebration in honor of Emporia State University President Michael R. Lane’s inauguration began Monday and will end Saturday with the inauguration ceremony. Speeches, music performances, luncheons, poster displays, presentations and tours are being held across campus. For daily updates and photos and the week’s schedule, click here. If you can’t attend the ceremony on Saturday, see it live online beginning at approximately 2 p.m. Click here for more information.  

Three area inaugural receptions are also on tap, for alumni and friends in and around Kansas City, Topeka and Wichita. You’re invited to come on out and celebrate ESU and President Lane! The Kansas City area reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, at the home of Pam Konetzni in Olathe; the Topeka area reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, at Top of the Tower in the Bank of America Building; and the Wichita area reception is from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at The Petroleum Club. Blaufuss Run/Walk raises $10,000 for scholarshipsRunners and walkers start the second annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk on March 17

The second annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk was held at Emporia State University on March 17, raising $10,000 for the Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program and honoring the memory of Blaufuss, a long-time friend of the university. The 5K run and 2-mile walk drew 42 runners and 85 walkers, and the events were followed by a reception at the Sauder Alumni Center. Gospel choir to hold eighth annual concert

Harmonious Voices of Praise, Emporia State University’s gospel choir, is hosting its eighth annual Gospel Extravaganza at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at First Christian Church, 202 E. 12th Street.

“The Gospel Extravaganza is an opportunity for people to be exposed to the genre of gospel music and the opportunity for people to accept Jesus Christ,” said Erica Manning, the choir president. “This event is by no means forcing anyone to believe in a particular religion, but it will open an opportunity for those who are willing to be exposed to Jesus Christ and to accept him in their lives.”

Other performances will also take place from various choirs, soloists, dancers, and poets from around the Emporia area. Read more

Student Foundation to build on its success

Fresh off a successful holiday fundraising project, the Student Foundation at Emporia State University is making plans for the future.

The student organization, formed last year as a liaison between students and the ESU Foundation and to assist in development efforts, met its $2,000 goal for the Light the Night project in December. Now the group is making plans for future projects. Read more

Expert on race and racism to speak at ESU

Tim Wise, an anti-racist writer and activist, is giving an informative and enlightening talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in Visser Hall Room 330. Wise will speak on “Beyond Diversity: How Race and Racism Effect our Daily Lives.”

Wise is among the most prominent anti-racist writers and activists in the country, and has been called “one of the most brilliant, articulate and courageous critics of white privilege in the nation,” by best-selling author and professor Michael Eric Dyson of the University of Pennsylvania. ESU softball team remains unbeatenESU softball

The Emporia State softball team finished the North Central Regional Crossover in Emporia with a 3-0 victory over Upper Iowa to go 5-0 for the weekend. Courtney Reed pitched six innings of one-hit softball, and Megan Grisell came on to pick up the save in the seventh. Offensively, Megan Davison pulled to within three of tying the MIAA career home run record of 50, hitting her 47th and driving in two runs. April Huddleston added the other RBI for the Hornets. Next up for the Hornets will be a double header with Pittsburg State on Wednesday, March 28 at Turnbull Field in the Trusler Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.

Hornet baseball goes 2-1 at SBU on Saturday

The Hornet baseball team won two of three games against Southwest Baptist on Saturday in Bolivar, Mo. ESU took the completion of Friday’s suspended game 8-1 with Kellen Mitts going five innings on Saturday with seven strikeouts. The Hornets won game one of the scheduled doubleheader 11-3 with Conner Crumbliss going 3-for-5 with three RBI while Mickey Lara went the distance on the hill, striking out seven. Billy Sharp had four RBI including a three-run homer while Tim Barger and Mark McBratney each had three RBI in the Hornets’ 18-14 loss in the final game of the day. The next action for the Hornets is a double header at Nebraska-Omaha on Tuesday, March 27 in Omaha, Neb.

Lady Hornets' Stueve earns another All-American honor

Add two-time Daktronics All-American to the resume of Lady Hornet Michelle Stueve. The junior from Olpe, Kan. has been named a third-team All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), the second straight year she has earned All-American honors from CoSIDA. Stueve led the MIAA in scoring and rebounding this year with 18.2 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. With her senior season remaining, Stueve is already the Lady Hornets’ fourth-leading scorer with 1,729 points and is seventh in rebounding with 771 boards, and the ESU career leader in made three-pointers with 199. She was also named a Kodak All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) earlier. In the classroom she is a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District performer, has been named Academic All-MIAA and is a member of the MIAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

Four Hornets named MIAA Player of the Week

The MIAA announced its players of the week for the week ending March 18 and four Hornets were among the players of the week. In baseball designated hitter Connor Crumbliss was named Wilson/MIAA hitter of the week. Courtney Reed repeated as the Worth/MIAA pitcher of the week. In tennis Marcella Bayon was named women’s tennis player of the week. All-American Jonel Rossbach was named women’s track athlete of the week.

ESU tennis splits duals at NWMSU

The #35 Emporia State women’s tennis team dominated Northwest Missouri 8-1 on March 17 in Maryville, Mo., in a rematch of last year’s NCAA North Central Sub-Regional. The Hornet men saw their five dual winning streak come to a halt in an 8-1 loss to the Bearcat men. After taking two of three doubles matches, the ESU women swept the singles competition, losing only two sets. The lone win for the Hornet men came at #1 singles as Julian Rios defeated Daniel Usieto, 7-6, 7-6. The next action for Hornets will be March 29 when the men take on Quincy (Ill.) in Marshall, Mo. The ESU women will next play host to Ft. Hays State on March 30.

ESU wins seven events at Spring Twilight ESU track and field

Emporia State had seven event championships and an early provisional qualifier at the Mike’s Sporting Goods Spring Twilight Track & Field Meet at Witten Track in Welch Stadium on March 15. Kara Euler, Jonel Rossbach, Cameron Babb, Eric Wellman, Shea Camien and Skyler Delmott all won individual championships for ESU as did the men’s 1600m relay. ESU took spring break off and will return to competition at the UT-Arlington Invitational on March 31 in Arlington, Texas.
