Going to Kansas City

The Hornets and Lady Hornets basketball teams are going to Kansas City for the MIAA postseason tournament. The men will get things started at 8:15 p.m. Thursday against Truman State. The women will take the court at 8:15 p.m. on Friday against Central Missouri State. See more on the action below.

ESU Day at the Capitol

Dozens of ESU departments and student organizations will take over Topeka on Thursday at the annual ESU Day at the Capitol. If you’re in the area, stop by the Capitol Building during the day to learn about all the ways ESU impacts the state of Kansas.

ESU honors four University Service Citation recipients

The four people honored with the 2007 University Service Citation award from Emporia State University at
a dinner Friday night all had one remarkable trait in common.

Art and Sue Bloomer, Marshall Havenhill and Janet Schalansky – on a night where the university was thanking them for unique and significant service – each stood and thanked ESU for the opportunity to serve.

ESU President Michael Lane said the recipients embraced the concept of “servant leadership. “The servant leader places the needs of the institution above their own needs, and I think that’s something these individuals have embodied,” he said.

As an ESU student, Schalansky took an internship at the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services – a department she later led as secretary. “What I learned here as a student really influenced my career,” she said. “I appreciate the opportunity to do what I’ve done. If it’s made a difference, that’s great.”

An attitude like that, seen in each of this year’s winners, certainly explains why they deserve the honor. Read the full story.

ESU spring enrollment the highest in 35 years

The spring enrollment at Emporia State University reached 6,120 students, setting the highest spring mark in 35 years. The total is 10 percent higher than spring 2006, once again showing the university’s commitment to providing students a nurturing learning environment in a close-knit community. Read the full story.

“I am very pleased with the continued increase in enrollment at ESU,” said ESU President Michael R. Lane. “Our commitment to our students is to provide them with the best education possible. Our excellent faculty and staff work very hard to provide an excellent learning and living environment. This increase in enrollment reaffirms our values of placing the education of our students at the forefront of our mission.”

The annual Sonia Kovalevsky Mathematics Day was held at ESU on Feb. 15, continuing its tradition of celebrating the accomplishments of women in mathematics. Students and teachers from southeast Kansas came to the event, and left with a strong impression.

“This is an excellent program. I have brought girls to this conference for years. It is important that young women realize if they have a good base in math and science they can choose any career they want,” said Elie Williams, a math instructor at Council Grove High School. “When I was in college, woman had two options, be a school teacher or go work for a company. It is not like that nowadays and I want my students to know they have choices and the sky’s the limit.”

ESU’s division of mathematics and computer science hosted the event on Feb. 15 under the direction of Dr. Marvin Harrell and Dr. Betsy Yanik, professors in the department of mathematics, computer Science, and economics. “This event is to celebrate your success in mathematics,” Yanik told the group of 11th graders. “Sonia Kovalevsky Day is a day-long celebration of women in mathematics and their accomplishments.” Read the full story.

History professor awarded fellowship

Joyce Thierer
Dr. Joyce Thierer

Dr. Joyce Thierer, assistant professor in the department of social sciences, is the recipient of the 2007 Kansas Artist Mini-Fellowship, awarded by the Kansas Arts Commission.

Thierer was awarded the mini-fellowship for her work in performance art – she travels the country with “Ride Into History,” a historical performance touring troupe.

“Dr. Thierer turns history alive for anyone who has the pleasure to attend one of her presentations,” said Dr. Rod Sobieski, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. “Her ability to bring historical characters to audiences of all ages through her depictions of women provides very authentic experiences to communicate elements of past times.”

The men came within 12 points but lost 108-89. Truman State, seeded #6 in the tournament, is next for the Hornets, who started the season 16-0 and are now 21-6.

The women, at 21-7, beat Southwest Baptist 82-68 to win their 14th MIAA game of the year. The Lady Hornets will take on 6th-seed Central Missouri State, the team that knocked them out of the MIAA tourney last season. Three Lady Hornets were honored with league honors, announced Tuesday afternoon. Michelle Stueve was a repeat, unanimous first-team selection, Casey Henningsen earned second-team honors for the second straight year and Cassondra Boston was named Freshman of the Year.

Four Hornet athletes are headed to the NCAA D-II Indoor Track and Field Championships in Boston, Mass., on March 9-10:

  • Trent Olivier made the championship field in the shot put.  His mark of 54-08.75 at the Mule Relays is ranked 13th going into the championships and is the fourth best mark all-time at ESU.

Baseball team finding form

The Hornets baseball Team grabbed two more victories over Bemidji State on Friday, winning game one of the double header 17-3 and the second, 18-7. In game one Jerry Cook had two home runs and finished the game with six RBI as Kellen Mitts picked up his first victory of the season. In game two Tim Barger had four RBIs and Nick Carlson had six as Grant Weiseiner came in and pitched 3.2 innings of relief to pick up the win.

Former K-State quarterback joins ESU coaching staff

Former Kansas State quarterback Jonathan Beasley has joined the Hornet coaching staff as a graduate assistant and quarterback coach.

“Bringing Coach Beasley on board is a great asset to our coaching staff and entire football program,” said football coach Garin Higgins. “He has a great deal of experience at a very high level of success. He is well known throughout the state of Kansas which will help with recruiting as well.”

Beasley graduated as the highest-rated passer in Kansas State history, with a 132.7 passing efficiency rating. He is one of only three Wildcats to throw for over 30 touchdowns in a career. Despite playing quarterback, he tied the Kansas State career record of 26 rushing touchdowns rushing and his 59 combined scores (33 passing, 26 rushing) tied the school’s all-time record first set by Michael Bishop. He was 21-4 as a starter for the Wildcats including wins in the Holiday and Cotton Bowls.

Last season, Beasley was the quarterback/running back coach for Wichita North HS. He played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL for the 2001 and 2002 seasons. Prior to joining the Roughriders, Beasley spent part of the 2001 preseason with the Green Bay Packers.
