Founders’ Day luncheon set for Feb. 12

Celebrate the 144th birthday of ESU in style at the Founders’ Day luncheon! The program includes a book-signing and review of Recollections: The Memoirs of Lyman Beecher Kellogg, by the author, local ESU historian Sam Dicks. Kellogg, the first president of Kansas State Normal School, will be represented by his descendants at the luncheon. Activities begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, in the Memorial Union Ballroom, and the program will begin at 12:05.

Hornet Hoops and a pre-game party 

There’s no better way to celebrate the first nationally televised basketball game from White Auditorium than by joining your ESU Alumni Association for a pre-game reception! Enjoy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar with alumni, friends, ESU coaches and Corky beginning at 5:15 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, at Bruff’s Bar and Grill, 2640 W. 18th St., Emporia. Cost is $5 per person. RSVP by Feb. 14 to Nikki Metz, (620) 341-5440, or nmetz1@emporia.edu.

Then catch the men’s and women’s home games on Saturday, Feb. 17. Both teams are playing in top form, and they’ll take on archrival Washburn. The women play at 11 a.m., followed by the men at 1:30 p.m.

The NCAA and CSTV are partnering to broadcast the women’s game nationally (check your local listings for the satellite channel). The match-up is one of six Division II games that CSTV will televise this season. “This is a terrific opportunity to showcase the quality competition and level of play in the MIAA to the rest of the nation,” said ESU Lady Hornet head coach Brandon Schneider.

 

Nominations sought for 2007 Distinguished Alumni

The highest honor granted to living ESU alumni needs a new class of distinguished recipients. The Alumni Association is soliciting nominations for the 2007 class of Distinguished Alumni, and nominations are due by Feb. 15. Read more about the award and find a nomination form by clicking here. Since the award’s inception, more than 190 alumni have been honored. Up to five are selected annually and honored during Homecoming celebrations.

 

Spotlight magazine wins two regional awards

The Spotlight, the magazine for Emporia State University alumni and friends, has earned two regional awards for the cover image on its summer 2006 edition. Award-winning summer 2006 cover of Spotlight, the alumni magazine

The cover image, portraying the contrast between yesterday’s classroom and the technology of tomorrow’s learning, earned a gold award for photography and a bronze award for graphic design from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) at the District VI conference on Jan. 23 in Kansas City.

The image was a collaborative effort of photographer Dick Garvey and graphic designer John Decker, both of the ESU Public Affairs and Marketing office, and Spotlight editor Jesse Tuel, of the University Advancement office. Published by the Advancement office, the winter 2007 edition was released in mid-January. See all the issues at www.emporia.edu/spotlight.

 

ESU art professor wins 2007 Governor’s Arts Award

Elaine Henry, associate professor and chair of the Department of Art, is a recipient of the 2007 Governor’s Arts Award. The Governor’s Arts Awards is an honor given annually toElaine Henry distinguished Kansas artists, patrons and educators, and has been awarded annually since 1974 by the governor and the Kansas Arts Commission. “Knowing Elaine’s commitment to what she does, including international venues, it is not a surprise that she won this prestigious award. We are extremely proud of Elaine and her accomplishments,” said Dr. Rod Sobieski, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Read more

 

ESU alum named one of four finalist for 2007 National Teacher of the Year

Emporia State University is continuing to produce well-prepared teachers for the state of Kansas and the nation. Josh Anderson, an ESU graduate and language arts teacher at Olathe Northwest High School was named as one of four finalists for the 2007 National Teacher of the Year. Read more

ESU graduate wins Missouri Governor’s Quality award

A 1972 graduate of Emporia State University has received the Missouri Governor’s Award for Quality and Productivity. Gene Gunn, who also obtained his master’s degree at ESU in 1978, was recognized in the category of innovation for his work on the Weldon Spring Superfund site about 30 miles west of St. Louis. Gunn is a supervisory environmental scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 office in Kansas City. Read more

 

TRIO program gets a fourth player, $675,000 grant The TRIO program and its staff

Emporia State University’s TRIO program was awarded a new Talent Search Grant through the U.S. Department of Education this fall. The $657,000 grant ($219,000 per year for three years) will afford ESU the opportunity to strengthen partnerships with area communities and begin encouraging students as young as middle school to seek a college degree. “We were very excited to get this grant,” said Trudi Benjamin, TRIO Programs director. “Through this program we have the opportunity to reach more students and help more students go to college.” Read more

 

SPORTS

Basketball teams pounce on Ft. Hays State

The Hornet men, ranked #9 in the nation, rebounded from their first loss of the season last Wednesday in a 76-73 road victory against Ft. Hays State University on Saturday. Donta Watson, ESU guardDonta Watson scored 18 to lead the Hornets, despite the team’s lowest one-half scoring output of the year.

On Wednesday, the Hornets get another shot at #16 Northwest Missouri, the team that beat them in Emporia last week to end the Hornets’ perfect 16-0 start. The Hornets opened the game on a 16-0 spurt but fell 89-72. The rematch will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bearcat Arena.

Michelle Stueve, ESU forward

The Lady Hornets scored 53 points in the second half to easily defeat Ft. Hays State, 89-60, on Saturday. The Lady Hornets, now 14-4 overall and tied for second in the MIAA with a 7-2 league mark, will take on Northwest Missouri at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in Maryville, Mo.

 

 

Rossbach moves up the mile chart

Jonel Rossbach ran the second-fastest indoor mile in ESU history to finish fourth in the Jonel Rossbachmile run and provisionally qualify for nationals at the Nebraska/adidas Invitational on Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. ESU had nine top ten finishers in the meet that featured 17 schools plus unattached competitors.
