CAREER FAIRS NOT JUST FOR UNDERGRADS
Dusting off your resume? It’s time to make plans to attend two spring career fairs, one for education and one for everyone else, at Emporia State University. They’re not just for the college students - alumni and community members are welcome.
The first is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in Webb Lecture Hall. You’ll have the opportunity to network with recruiters from a variety of career fields and graduate and professional programs. Candidates can move from table to table distributing resumes and learning about internship and fulltime employment opportunities. Some recruiters will also conduct individual interviews following the fair in the afternoon. To register for the career fair visit www.emporia.edu/career/whatiscareerfair.htm or call the Career Services office at (620) 341-5168.
The education career fair, April 4 on the ESU campus, is one of the largest of its kind in the United States, with more than 100 schools from Kansas and beyond participating. The morning fair provides an opportunity to visit the booths and talk with recruiters from all the districts. The afternoon event is a time for one-on-one interviews, with a possibility of obtaining a second on-site interview at a later date, signing a letter of intent, or signing a contract that day. You’ll register by signing in at the career fair. For more information, visit www.emporia.edu/career/whatisedcareerfair.htm or call the Career Services office at (620) 341-5168.
SEMESTER UNDER WAY

FIVE SCIENCE-RELATED SCHOLARSHIPS FORMED AT EMPORIA STATE
The sciences are flourishing at Emporia State University. In recent months, five new scholarships have been established by alumni and friends to benefit science students. They are the Dr. Robert and Louise Boles Scholarship, the Gerald Witten Scholarship Fund, the John R. and Lenore S. Zimmerman Scholarship Fund, the Mark and Jill Brady Scholarship Fund, and the Chemistry Emeritus Faculty Scholarship.
The web of support equals a formula for success. “These scholarships are significant incentives because of documented shortages nationally in the scientific and teaching fields,” said DeWayne Backhus, chairman of the departments of physical sciences. “In addition, the availability of scholarships and financial aid in general has not kept pace with the increasing costs. These additional dollars are significant to provide access to higher education for those with the talent and interest in the sciences.”

ESU NAMED A 'BEST VALUE'
Emporia State University is among the best values in the country for a college education, according to the Princeton Review. The publication listed ESU among 150 colleges on the “best value” list, which also included the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and the University of St. Mary in Leavenworth.

SPORTS
BASKETBALL TEAMS STILL ON TOP
Two much-hyped games were canceled over the weekend due to winter weather, but the nationally ranked men’s and women’s basketball teams will be back at it Wednesday night when they host Missouri Southern for a double-header.
The #7 ESU men, at 14-0 with their highest ranking ever as a member of the NCAA, will play at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The contest against #3 Central Missouri State, also 14-0 and undefeated in MIAA play, would’ve melted all that ice. That game has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 19 in Emporia.
The ESU women, ranked #8 and led by the current Wilson/MIAA player of the week, Michelle Stueve, play at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Stueve recorded her league-best eighth double-double of the season in a win over Truman last week, and moved into eighth place on ESU’s career scoring list.
ESU WINS TWO EVENTS AT INVITATIONAL
Jonel Rossbach and Eric Wellman both picked up individual championships on Friday night and Kara Euler placed second in the 400m dash to lead the Emporia State track and field team on Saturday at the Nebraska/Holiday Inn Invitational in Lincoln, Neb., one of the largest annual indoor meets held in the Midwest. The Hornets are back in action on Friday, Jan. 19 at the UCM Invitational in Warrensburg, Mo.
Rossbach edged out Nebraska’s Kim Pancoast by less than a second to win the women’s 1000m run. Her time of 2:56.04 was 0.69 seconds faster than Pancoast and is a new ESU school record. She bettered the old record of 3:00.67 set by Michelle Hebb at the 1993 MIAA Championships.
Wellman outraced Butler County CC’s Stephen Gicharu by 0.26 seconds in the men’s 3000m. Wellman’s time of 8:46.26 was over 15 seconds faster than the third place finisher.
