Men's and women's basketball teams catch the fever
March Madness has infected both Hornet basketball teams – the men and women garnered at-large berths to the NCAA D-11 basketball tournaments, and begin play in their respective South Central regional tournaments this week.
The Lady Hornets enter as a #5 seed and will play Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday in St. Joseph, Mo., in the third game of the day. The Hornet men are the #7 seed and will take on Southeastern Oklahoma on Saturday in Warrensburg, Mo., in the second game of the day. For the second time in four years, both teams have made the NCAA tourney.
The Lady Hornets take on a team that finished 25-8 and won the Lone Star Conference North Division with a 10-2 league record. A win Friday would put them in the path of the winner of Missouri Western vs. Montana. The men will take on the #9 team in the country. Southeastern Oklahoma State finished 25-4, winning the Lone Star Conference North Division with an 11-1 record.
Tickets for the women are $12 per session for reserved tickets, $8 per session for adult general admission and $4 per session for students. An all-session reserved pass will cost $25. For the men, tickets are $10 per session for reserved tickets, $8 per session for adult general admission, $3 per session for students, and $25 for an all-session reserved pass.
A limited number of general admission tickets for both games can be ordered through the ESU Athletic Ticket Office at (877) 341-NEST (6378). Once those run out, tickets are available through the ticket offices at the University of Central Missouri, in Warrensburg, and at Missouri Western University, in St. Joseph.
UCM is hosting a tournament tip-off banquet for the men’s regional tourney, at 7 p.m. Friday, March 9, in the Elliot Union Ballroom on campus. UCM has 150 tickets available for fans to attend the event, at $15 per ticket. Reserve your tickets by contacting Rhonda Crews at (660) 543-4250 by 5 p.m. Wednesday.
The men’s competition has a unique twist this year. ESU freshman Dustin Andrews, a
native of Lee’s Summit, Mo., will high jump at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships at 4 p.m. (EST) in Boston, Mass., on Friday and then hop a plane back to the Midwest to suit up for the Hornets in their 2:30 p.m. (CST) game against Southeastern Oklahoma State. Andrews is currently ranked eighth in the nation in the high jump, having cleared 6-10.50 at the MIAA Championships. He is averaging 2.6 points and 0.9 rebounds per game in 18 games for the Hornet basketball team. He had 10 points in ESU’s MIAA tournament game against Truman State.
