John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walkcommunity campaign

The third annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk on Saturday, April 19, at Emporia State University raised about $10,000 for ESU scholarships. More than 200 participants followed the 5K running course or the 2-mile walking route, ending at the Sauder Alumni Center for refreshments and awards.

Medals were awarded to the top three men and women in the 5K race. John Mead won the race with a time of 20:07, followed by Wade Schmidt in second at 20:43 and David Zlab in third at 21:37. The women were led by Maureen Smith at 22:16, Makaila McClelland in second at 22:18, and Kelly Boehm in third at 23:58. See the 5K results, including all runners' times, by clicking here.

All proceeds from the annual event, sponsored this year by Barnhart Builders of Olpe, Kan., benefit ESU’s General Scholarship Fund. John Blaufuss, a beloved figure at Emporia State University, was killed by a drunk driver while jogging in December 2005. The ESU controller served ESU for more than 30 years, and was a firm believer in supporting ESU and contributed to numerous scholarship funds for students. At the first Blaufuss Run/Walk in 2006, in honor of Blaufuss, ESU dedicated a statue of Corky the Hornet in Union Square.

The 2007 campus/community challenge

The 2007 challenge began with began with Scholarbucks Cafe and culminated in the second annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk to benefit ESU scholarships, on March 17, 2007.

The support was tremendous for the run/walk. We raised $10,000 for scholarships and had a great time getting there! See the video, check out the pictures below, or click here to read the press release. For full race results in the 2007 5K, click here.

Runners and walkers start the second annual John Blaufuss Memorial Run/Walk at 9 a.m. Saturday at Emporia State University. 42 runners and 85 walkers participated, raising $10,000 for ESU’s Presidential Academic Awards scholarship program in honor of the late John Blaufuss, a long-time employee and friend of ESU.

At Scholarbucks Cafe in 2007, we kicked-off the scholarship drive by recognizing just how crucial faculty and staff support is for the ongoing achievements of our students. We also had a bit of fun, as the pictures show!
