Successful Seniors' Advice to Incoming Freshman
- Go to class regularly. Skipping classes will affect your learning and your grade.
- Read each class syllabus and be aware of class requirements and attendance policies.
- Keep up with class work—don’t get behind.
- Find something to enjoy in every class.
- Talk to your professors and your advisor—don’t be afraid to ask for help.
- Take general education courses seriously because these classes are an opportunity to learn about disciplines outside of your field—they make your education well-rounded.
- Study hard. You always retain more if you put in extra effort, and after all, you are here to learn!
- Set goals each semester.
- Everyone has difficulties occasionally. Use campus resources when you need them.
- Pick up a free ESU Planner. Organization is the key!
- Be aware of last date to withdraw from a class.
- Get involved on campus. Extra-curricular clubs, teams and advocacy groups will help you develop a network and teach you about yourself.
- Don’t overload yourself with too many activities—know your limits.
- Most of us need to find a job, but be careful about how many hours you work. If you work more than 15-20 hours, you will not have enough time to study. Your grades will suffer.
- Get plenty of sleep and exercise and eat healthy!
- Read every chance you can get, including The Bulletin, the campus newspaper.
- Stay here on weekends.
- Enjoy the diversity of those around you. This may be one of the few times in life when you’ll be around so many different types of people.
