Learning Communities

Emporia State University and the Department of Residential Life are offering two distinct learning and living environments for the college student wishing to experience something little different, but still wishing to stay in the residence halls. These three "Learning Communities" are designed to give students a unique experience in their living environment that will supplement classroom learning. The three communities include the Honors Residence and Wellness Community Residence.

Eligibility

Each learning community has requirements listed below. Indicate your preference for one of these communities on your contract and send in the written response with the contract.

Honors Community

The Honors Community is designed to allow first year and returning Honor Students to reside among dedicated fellow students with diverse academic interests and ambitions. This community is designed for students who enjoy intellectual challenges and desire an environment conducive to success in their rigorous academic program. Within the Honors Residence, students are provided a computer lab for their academic use. In addition to the housing contract, students interested in applying for the Honors Residence must apply and be accepted to the Honors Program. The application form for the Honors Program is available by contacting the Director of the Honors program at (620) 341-5899 or at honors@emporia.edu, or from the web site at http://www.emporia.edu/honors/. The priority deadline for this placement is May 15, 2006. Sophomore, junior and senior students are eligible to live in this community if they have maintained a 3.5 cumulative grade point average. The Honors Community is located on the 2nd floor of Abigail Morse Hall.

Wellness Community

The Wellness Community is designed for the student who is health conscious or who is interested in a career in health, recreation, wellness, or a related field. Special attention will be made to the total development of residents in this area through programming and activities. To ensure and attract students who wish to promote healthy living, students wishing to live in this community will need to write a statement pledging that they will stay chemical-free, on and off campus, while living there. This statement needs to be sent to the Department of Residential Life along with your Housing Contract materials. The Wellness Community is located on the 1st floor of Northeast Morse Hall.

International Community

The International Community is for housing both American and International students who wish to share their culture and learn about a variety of other cultures. This is a great community for anyone wishing to expand his or her knowledge of world issues. Students residing in this community will be permitted to stay during Winter Break for an additional fee of $231.00. Students in all other areas will be required to vacate both complexes during Winter Break.
