Rules Of The Game
INTRAMURAL VOLLEYBALL IS GOVERNED BY THE OFFICIAL HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL RULE BOOK EXCEPT WHERE NOTED DIFFERENTLY BELOW. PLAYERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO PURCHASE AND READ THE RULE BOOK TO GAIN A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE GAME (RULE BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT MANY LOCAL SPORTING GOODS STORES).
- PLAYERS MUST PRESENT THEIR ID CARDS TO THE OFFICIALS BEFORE EACH CONTEST IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY.
- Forfeits--Game time is forfeit time.
- A team is composed of six players. A team must have three players to start the game.
- Have your team ready to play at least 10 minutes in advance of game time. Before game time:
- check in with the officials, and
- turn in ID's from each player.
- Team captains will meet the officials prior to the game to make the coin toss. The toss of the coin by the official will determine which team will serve first and which court each will occupy. The choice will be given to the winner of the toss and the loser will receive the alternate choice. At this same time, a coin toss will also be made to determine the server and court selection for the third game.
- Each match consists of three games. All three games will be played regardless of who won the first two games. Team records will be kept by games/points won, not by matches won. Games will be played to 25 points with rally scoring.
- Time outs may be taken at a rate not to exceed one per game.
- In the playing area, lines and ceilings are good provided the ball hits the ceiling on the side of the team that last hit the ball, but the walls and goals are out. The center line may be stepped on, but not over.
- Teams change courts after the first two games.
- The team not serving first in the first game serves first in the second game.
- Legal and illegal hits -
- When the ball is hit into the net, it is still playable.
- Only the front row players may block, however, the blocker must not contact the ball until it has been spiked. The blocker may follow through over the net, but not touch it.
- Service may be contacted overhead or underhand. The ball May contact the net on the service. The serve may not be blocked. This will result in a point being awarded to the serving team.
- When a player contacts a spike above the net, he/she may touch the net. Only front row players may spike.
- If two people hit the ball at the exact same time, either may hit it again.
- Successive hits by the same person are illegal.
- Any contact with the ball below the waist is an illegal hit.
- Carrying, lifting, pushing, and throwing the ball is not a legal hit.
- More than three hits by one team before the ball crosses the net is illegal.
- Substitutions may be made upon request of and recognition by the official any time the ball is dead. A player may enter the game provided he/she enters each time at the back-middle position.
- Double fouls and questionable play as determined by the official will be replayed.
- The server must acknowledge the official before serving. If the server does not immediately serve after the initial signal of the official, it will result in a side-out. If the server fails to acknowledge the official before serving two times in a row, the official will declare a side out.
- The referee shall have the power to warn, declare side-out or point, or disqualify from the game any player who:
- Addresses the official persistently about decisions.
- Makes derogatory remarks about or to officials.
- Commits acts which are derogatory to officials or which tend to influence their decisions.
- Unsportsmanlike conduct will result in disqualification of the player and/or team.
- The UNIVERSITY RECREATION PROGRAMS Department reserves the right to remove any team from the regular schedule if a team forfeits two (2) games.
ADDITIONAL CO-RECREATIONAL VOLLEYBALL RULES
All regular rules apply with the following additions or exceptions
- There must be at least an equal number of women to men on the court. If there are only five players present, three must be women.
- Men and women will be placed alternately on the court.
- When the ball is in your offensive court. These are the possible hit combinations for attack.
- One male or one female - 1 hit
- One male and one female - 2 hits
or two females
- One male, two females - 3 hits
three females
one male, one female, one male
two males, one female
one female, two males
*** Two males cannot hit the ball over the net unless a female has first made contact with the ball. |
