Rules Of The Game

Intramural Softball is governed by the official ASA Slow Pitch Softball Rules Book except where noted differently below. Players are encouraged to purchase and read the rule book to gain a better understanding of the game (rule books are available for sale at many local sporting goods stores).

  1. PLAYERS MUST PRESENT THEIR ID CARDS TO THE OFFICIALS BEFORE EACH CONTEST IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY.
  2. A player may play on only one team. Only men are able to play on men's teams and only women can play on women's teams. Additionally each person may play on one co-recreational team.
  3. A player may not play for a team unless their name is on the official roster; a player may be added to the official roster up until the end of the first week of play.
  4. If a team fails to appear at the scheduled time for a contest, the game will be forfeited to the opposing team. If neither team appears, both teams will be given a loss.
  5. The University Recreation Programs Department reserves the right to remove any team from the remaining schedule if the team forfeits two or more games.

BATTING

  1. Bunts are not allowed
  2. If the batter has 2 strikes and hits a foul ball, the batter is out.
  3. If there are less than nine players, each batter under the nine is an out when that spot comes up in the batting order.

BASE RUNNING

  1. A player may not return to a missed base after he/she has made contact with the next base.
  2. The base runner is NOT out when he/she is hit with a fair ball that has passed through an infielder with no other fielder having a chance to play the ball, unless the base runner intentionally lets the ball hit him/her.
  3. Runners may not proceed to the next base until the ball is hit by the batter, or an out will occur. No stealing or leading off.
  4. If the batter is hit by a pitch, it is considered one of the pitches received.

PITCHING

  1. The ball must be delivered with a minimum arc of 6 feet and a maximum of 12 feet.
  2. A "No Pitch" shall be declared when:
    1. The runner leaves the base to soon, causing an out.
    2. Pitcher does not arc the ball enough or the arc is too high.
    3. The ball slips from the pitcher's hand during his/her wind-up or back swing.
  3. Any relief pitcher gets five warm-up pitches which cannot exceed more than one minute, before resuming play.

THE GAME

  1. A game is completed if and when one of the following occurs:
    1. Seven innings have been completed.
    2. One team has a ten run lead after five innings, or 15 runs after 3 completed innings.
    3. When the 45-minute time limit has been reached. No New inning shall be started after 40 minutes elapsed time.
  2. Only one base will be permitted on any overthrow in foul territory.
  3. Infield fly rule IS in effect. If there are runners on 1st and 2nd base or 1st, 2nd and 3rd with LESS THAN two outs and the batter hits a pop fly in the infield, the batter is automatically out.
  4. A Home Run Rule will be implemented. Each team is allowed only one (1) home run per inning, any additional home runs hit will be declared out.
  5. Each batter will begin with a count of one ball and one strike.

PLAYERS AND SUBSTITUTES

  1. A team will consist of not more than ten players on the playing field at one time, whose positions shall be anywhere in fair territory except for the pitcher and catcher, who must be in their respective positions.
  2. A late player just entering the game may play in the field or bat in the inning in which he/she has been substituted.
  3. Free substitution is permitted. A substitute must stay in a full inning and the one substituted for must stay out a full inning. The substitute must bat in the order of the original player.
  4. A team may insert an EXTRA HITTER (EH) into its line-up. The batting order must remain constant; however, any 10 of the 11 players can take a defensive position throughout the game. IT IS NOT MANDATORY THAT A TEAM USE AN EH in the game.
  5. There will be no forfeit if a team loses its EH prior to the end of the game.
  6. Each team that has an excess of 1 ex-varsity softball/baseball player will be penalized 3 points per ex-varsity player.

EQUIPMENT

  1. Shoes must be worn. Rubber, or molded spikes are acceptable. Metal spikes will not be allowed.

ADDITIONAL CO-RECREATIONAL SOFTBALL RULES

  1. Batting order must alternate between male and female players.
  2. Seven players must be present to play. If a team has only seven players, four must be female. The positioning of male and female players is at the discretion of each team.
  3. When ever there is an odd number of players, their needs to be more females playing/batting than males.
  4. If there are less than nine players, each batter under the nine is an out when that spot comes up in the batting order.
