Rules Of The Game
Intramural basketball is governed by the KSHSAA rules except where noted differently below. Players are encouraged to purchase and read the rule book to gain a better understanding of the game (RULE BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE FOR SALE AT MANY LOCAL SPORTING GOODS STORES).
- PLAYERS MUST PRESENT THEIR ID CARDS TO THE OFFICIALS BEFORE EACH CONTEST IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO PLAY.
- Each participant must contact the officials or scorer prior to their game and PRESENT THEIR NAME AND ID NUMBER TO CHECK INTO THE GAME, THE SCORE KEEPER WILL WRITE YOUR JERSEY NUMBER ON THE SCORE SHEET. TEAMS SHOULD BE PRESENT A MINIMUM OF TEN MINUTES BEFORE THE SCHEDULED START OF THE GAME.
- Players will not be permitted to wear jewelry or clothing deemed dangerous to the participants. All players must wear a shirt under their pennies at all times, and their shirt must be tucked in.
- All players must wear tennis shoes with non-marking soles.
- A person may play on only one men's/women's team and one co-recreational team.
- As a result of a player receiving a technical foul, the participant will have to sit out of the game for a two minute period. The second offense will result in the participant being suspended for a minimum of one week. The offending person must speak to the Intramural Director before being able to participate in any additional games.
- A player can be ejected from the game without receiving a foul, depending on the severity of the offense.
- Any individual ejected from a contest shall be suspended from all intramural play until they discuss the situation with the Intramural Director. When the ejection is a result of the individual hanging on the rim, a minimum one game suspension will be established.( When a player is ejected from a game, he/she must immediately leave the Student Recreation Center for at least the remainder of that day, and possibly longer depending on the severity of the infraction.)
- Games will be played in 20 minute halves with five minutes between halves. The clock will run continuously except for time outs and in the last two minutes of each half. In co-ed, the second and fourth quarters.
- The teams must have at least 4 players to start the game. Game time is forfeit time.
- If the game is tied at the completion of regulation play, one three minute overtime period shall be played. If the score is still tied at the completion of this period a sudden death overtime will be played. The first team to score wins. In playoffs as many three minute overtime periods as needed will be played to determine a winner.
- Hanging on the rim of the basket is not permitted at any time. Any individual seen violating this rule will be ejected from the game and the recreational facility. This rule is in effect before, during, and after all contests.
- Three technical fouls assessed to one team, regardless of the reason, will immediately cause the game to be defaulted. Additionally, the team captain must discuss the situation with the Director of University Recreation Programs before the team may participate in another contest. All missed games will count as forfeits.
- Each team is limited to three (3) one-minute time-outs per game and one time-out each overtime. The three regular time-outs may be taken at any time. Regulation time outs don’t carry over to overtime time outs.
- A coin will be flipped to determine which team will get the ball to start the game and which goal will be defended by each team. The team not gaining control of the ball at the start of the game will receive the ball next under the alternating possession rule.
- Substitutions are made only during dead ball situations. Substitutes must notify the scorer, who will notify the officials of the substitution. They must wait for the official to wave the substitution in. Violations of this will result in a technical foul.
- The University Recreation Programs Department reserves the right to remove any team from the remaining regular schedule if a team forfeits two (2) games.
- A throw-in starts when the ball is at the disposal of the player or team entitled to the throw-in. The thrower-in shall release the ball on a pass directly into the court within 5 seconds after the throw-in starts.
- It is a violation to remain for 3 seconds in that part of his or her free throw lane between the end boundary and the farther edge of the free throw line while the ball is in control of his or her team in his or her front court. Allowance shall be made for a player who, having been in the restricted area for less than 3 seconds, dribbles in or moves to try for goal.
- It is a violation to be, nor may your teammate be, in continuous control of a ball which is in his or her back court for 10 seconds.
- If a team is ahead by 30 or more points with 10 minutes to play in the game, the team that is ahead will be declared the winner. The teams are allowed to continue, if they desire, until 10 minutes before the next game is scheduled to begin. In coed play, the 30 point rule will take place after the completion of the third quarter.
- Each team captain is required to sign the score sheet at the conclusion of each game played.
PERSONAL FOULS
- When a personal foul is committed, the offender is charged with one foul, and if it is his/her 5th foul, or if it is flagrant, he or she is disqualified. The offended player is awarded free throws as follows:
- No free throws for:
- Each common foul before the bonus rule is in effect.
- A double personal foul.
- A player control foul.
- A double personal foul, one or both of which are flagrant or intentional.
- One free throw if fouled in the act of shooting and the 2 or 3-point try is successful.
- Bonus free throw for each common foul (except player control) beginning with team's 7th foul during the half, provided the first attempt is successful.
- The tenth team foul and during the last two minutes of each half all fouls committed by the defending team will result in two free throw shots for the other team.
- Two free throws if intentional or flagrant plus the ball for throw-in.
- Fouled in the act of shooting and the try is unsuccessful:
- Two free throws on 2-point try.
- Three free throws on 3-point try.
- Plus ball for throw-in if intentional or flagrant.
THREE POINT SHOT
- If the shot goes in, three points are scored and the shooter is awarded one free throw shot.
- If the shot does not go in, three free throw shots are awarded to the shooter (after the third foul shot play continues).
TWO POINT SHOT
- If the shot goes in, two points are scored for the shooter and one free throw shot is awarded.
- If the shot does not go in, Two free throw shots are awarded to the shooter (after the second foul shot play continues).
Technical fouls are an automatic two points with the ball going to the offended team. A technical foul results in a personal foul and a team foul. Any individual receiving two technical fouls in a contest will be ejected from the game.
Flagrant fouls are penalized by two free throws and ball out of bounds. The offending player will be ejected.
ADDITIONAL RULES FOR CO-RECREATIONAL PLAY
- Co-recreational play shall be played in four 8 minute quarters with one minute between quarters.
- Teams shall consist of at least three males and three females. The first and third quarters shall be played between three females and two males per team. The second and fourth quarters shall be played between three males and two females. There must be at least two females playing at all times or the contest will be forfeited. Additionally, to begin the contest at least three females must be present before the game will begin. Any overtime periods shall alternate beginning with three females and two males. If only two females are present, only two males can play during the 1st and 3rd quarters.
- A field goal shot by a male or female counts for two points unless behind the three point line. If completely behind the 3 point line, a successful shot is worth three points.
- Fouls will be administered same as regular play.

The following amendments are to be made to the Intramural Participation Rules effective as of July 1, 2002. The changes are being made to provide equality among talent levels and to equalize the competition, thus disallowing any individual with intercollegiate playing experience from competing in intramural sports in the same or similar sport.
