Mission

The mission of the Emporia State University Recreation Programs department is to serve by enhancing and improving the quality of life for the campus community, by providing desired recreation facilities, programs, activities, events, and services.

Our staff would like to extend an invitation for you to become part of our community. We are dedicated to providing you with the opportunity to explore your interests and enhance your physical and emotional wellness.   We strive to remain dynamic in our endeavors to provide quality recreational programming especially designed to fit your needs.

This informational guide has been prepared to inform all publics of our program offerings, policies and procedures to insure the best service possible in providing for your recreational needs.

Multipurpose Facilities

Our Multipurpose Recreational Facilities include indoor and outdoor areas which can be utilized in many versatile ways.  Our Indoor Facility consists of one large multipurpose gym which has three courts that are surounded by an indoor jogging track, a state of the art fitness area, free weight exercise room, dance studio, commons area which was television dasrts and pool table, lockers and a reception center. In the HPER building we also operate a 25 meter swimming pool and heated therapeuticpool,  All of our Indoor Facilities are Handicapped Accessible.

Multipurpose Gymnasium

The open recreation area features a large expansive multipurpose exercise area with vaulted ceilings. The area features three, regulation basketball courts placed side by side, with a three-lane running track around the perimeter of the courts. Net dividers provide for flexibility to offer a variety of activities simultaneously. The floor is made of Mondo rubberized flooring, which also delineates the track surface from the court surface by differing colors and textures. There are windows at the top of the walls to provide natural additional light to the area.

Fitness Exercise Area

The cardiovascular/variable resistance equipment exercise area is designed to provide patrons with a panoramic view of the north side of the Emporia State University campus. The north side of the room features a rounded side with large expansive windows simulating an atmosphere of being outdoors, with a spectacular view of grass areas and trees. This 2100 square foot area is equipped with state of the art cardiovascular and variable resistance exercise equipment. This area also contains television monitors utilized for wireless Broadcast Vision to accommodate patrons who prefer to watch television while exercising

Commons Area

The commons area separates the expansive multipurpose gymnasium area and the free weight room, multipurpose exercise room, and rest room areas. This area is designed to accommodate patrons by providing a social area with tables, chairs, and a big screen television. Ping pong tables, pool table, and vending machines provide both leisure activity opportunities and an area to sit back have a snack and drink, while enjoying some visual stimulation on the big screens. Patrons can see the activities being held in all areas of the Recreation Center. By design, this commons area will host parties and other activities, promoting a healthy lifestyle, while offering a social interaction alternative for the campus community on evenings and weekends.

Free Weight Area

The free weight area is 1925 square feet, equipped with state of the art free weight equipment and rubberized flooring. The north and south walls are lined with mirrors, and the west wall features large expansive windows providing an outdoor view.

Multipurpose Exercise Area

The multipurpose exercise area is designed to accommodate any type of exercise activity, and also provides the opportunity for group meetings. The floor is made of wood, the north and south walls are lined with mirrors, and the west wall consists of large windows providing a view of the outdoors. The area will also possess a state of the art sound system, and big screen television designed to provide a variety of exercise classes. The stereo system will also be linked to the entire Recreation Center providing specialized sound capabilities to host an array of dynamic activities and events.

Reception Center

The reception center is the command center, which monitors ingress and egress control for the Recreation Center. Patrons will check into and exit the center using their University Identification Card (Hornet Card). The reception center also disburses Recreation Programs information, and compiles participation data for the Recreation Center.

HPER Building

The indoor Recreation amenities located in the HPER building are two Swimming Pools (50-Meter Competitive Pool with a 1 Meter Diving Board and a Therapeutic Heated Pool), Six Racquetball Courts, and Locker Rooms equipped with showers, bathrooms, lockers, and changing areas

Outdoor Facilities

Our Outdoor Facilities include lighted Tennis Courts and designated grass areas which are utilized for football, soccer, softball, baseball, rugby and any other activities requiring open green areas.  Our fitness trail can be enjoyed by all, either as an exercise routine or leisurely walk.  The mountain bike riding trails provide a fun challenge for trail riders of all ages.

Our University Recreation Programs department offers a wide array of leagues, activities and events for all to enjoy.  We also provide open recreation hours for each individual or group to engage in recreational and leisure activities, while enhancing their health and wellness.

FacilityUser Fees

Students of Emporia State University can use the student recreationalcenter by presenting a current ID card at the reception center upon arival.  The facilities are also available to ESU employees, and affiliates.

Memberships for the student recreation center may be purchased at the Reception Center. To purchase a membership, a current Hornet card must be presented.

Facility Procedures

Patron Check In

All patrons who have access to the Center will have a "Hornet Card". Every patrons "Hornet Card" must be scanned to verify approval for access to the Recreation Center. The Reception Center attendant then activates the buzzer to unlock the control Gate. Otherwise the gate remains locked.To Exit out of the Recreation Center, there are gates which open out only, Exit gates are located next to the entrance gate.

Equipment Checkout

Sports equipment is available for checkout at the Reception Center either during the check in process or subsequent to facility entry.  Students may
check out outdoor equipment with proper presentation of a current ESU ID.

Guests

Students, and Facility Members  are allowed to bring a guest to our facility.  The guest must check in at the Reception Center, pay a one day fee of $4.00 and be accompanied by the current member at all times.  The Host is responsible for their guest and will be held entirely accountable for their guest,  during the duration of the visit.  Guests are not allowed to check out equipment.

Locker

Lockers are available for check out in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center. You must deposit a quarter into the locker to secure your key. When you return your key, the quarter will be returned.  Towel are available to check out at the Reception Center at no cost.

Recreational Programming

Goals

The goals of the University Recreation Programs department are to Adapt to a Dynamic Population, Offer State of the Art Equipment throughout  the facility, Promote Intramural Participation and Offer a Diversified Intramural Program, Offer Non-Traditional Activities and Sponsor Special Events and Activities which enhances the popularity of the Program among  the University Community.

The University Recreation Programs Department offers a wide variety of leagues, activities and events throughout the academic year.  League play is offered in Flag Football, Basketball, Volleyball and Softball.  Competition
is divided among men, women, and co-ed categories to provide just the right level of play.  One day activities and events are held to enhance student life and provide for competition and a healthy social atmosphere for all.  For additional information contact the University Recreation Programs Department at 341-5944.

Sport Clubs

The Sports Club program is designed to develop and promote the interests and skills of individuals in various sports and / or recreational activities.  The program provides competitive, instructional, and recreational activity for ESU student, Faculty and Staff.  The specific objectives of the Sports Club program are:

  •   To offer sports club opportunities for interested persons who have the desire to   participate.
  •   To develop new skills or improve existing abilities through organized sports activities.
  •   To promote fellowship and sportsmanship through special interest sports activities.

Health Promotion & Wellness

The Health Promotion Program is designed to provide "Personalized Services" to Enhance Health and Wellness. One of the Goals of the Recreation Programs Department is to "Enhance Health and Wellness".

Computerized Health Risk Appraisal

This tool is utilized to appraise a Persons Lifestyle, Habits, and Biographic data. This information is then analyzed to provide Anticipated Outcomes based on Inherent Risk Factor Data.

Facility Reservation Policy

Groups made up of members of the campus community (students and employees only), have the privilege of using specific areas of the Recreation Center.

The Student Recreation Center is designed for business occupancy, not assembly occupancy; therefore the Student Recreation Center shall only be used for standard purpose Recreation or Leisure activities.
