Reading Recovery® Facts
An Update to Policy Makers 2004-2005

Reading Recovery is a highly effective early literacy intervention that is implemented in 121 schools throughout Kansas.

Included here is information about the program and documentation to show Reading Recovery:

  • meets the criteria of “scientifically-based,”
  • is eligible for federal funding,
  • is highly successful in helping at-risk students in Kansas, and
  • that the gains made by students who complete the program are sustainable.

Reading Recovery as an Early Literacy Intervention

Reading Recovery is a short-term, scientifically-based literacy intervention that is highly effective in assisting the lowest achieving first grade students who are having difficulty learning to read and write.

During this intervention, children make accelerated progress so they can catch up with their peers and continue to work on their own within an average group setting within the regular classroom.

Reading Recovery Basic Facts


Executive Summary for Reading Recovery in Kansas 2003-04

  • During 2003-04, 78% of all children who had an opportunity to receive a full program of instruction successfully completed the program and reached grade level or above proficiency.
  • By year end, 88% of these students were reading at grade level or above.
  • In 2003-04, only 1% of students who successfully discontinued from the program were referred and placed in special education services.

Reading Recovery Research Brief: Does Reading Recovery Work in Kansas? A Retrospective Longitudinal Study of Sustained Effects

The study found when standardized test scores for a group of fourth grade students originally identified as most at-risk for learning to read in first grade were compared to scores of a randomly selected comparison group spanning all ability levels, the at-risk children who successfully finished their Reading Recovery programs performed at near-mean levels compared to the comparison group.
