Oral Presentations

Oral presentations are limited to 15 minutes: 12 minutes to present your material and 3 minutes to take questions.

Each room will have a digital projector and computer.  Save your presentation on at least two different media (e.g., CD or jump drive).  It is also a good idea to e-mail yourself a copy of your PowerPoint in case your electronic copy becomes corrupted.

A moderator will be present to help you get set up for your presentation, to introduce you, and to monitor your time.  Practice your presentation so that you will not get cut off abruptly before you have a chance to finish making your main points.

Try to arrive at the room for your session several minutes before the session starts, even if you are not the first presenter.  This will give you a chance to get your presentation loaded on the computer, or relax before you present.

The evaluation forms below may help you think about what information to include in your presentation and how to organize it.  Additionally, Psi Chi offers several excellent articles on doing oral and poster presentations.

Poster Presentations

Posters will be mounted on poster display boards.  Pushpins, easels, and boards are provided. Poster boards are 30" wide x 40" tall, free standing, and the poster backing is white.  Students using 8 1/2" x 11" paper will be able to fit 9 pages (orientated vertical) or 12 pages (orientated horizontal) onto the display board.

Please try to arrive during the 15-minutes before your poster session is to begin so that you can put up your poster. Take your poster down immediately after the end of your poster session so that the next group of presenters have time to put up their posters. Be prepared to answer questions about your poster and to offer a brief “walk through” explaining the essence of your research in 1-2 minutes. Handouts are encouraged.

Your poster should communicate the main points of your research. Remember that this is a visual medium, so use large, easily readable text and graphics. Do NOT simply print out a paper.

Awards

Each poster session and oral session will have a first place award and second place award. Awards will be determined by two judges (faculty volunteers) in each session. They will use the evaluation forms located under Oral Presentation Guidelines and Poster Guidelines. Awards will be announced at the Awards Luncheon on Saturday.

Remember that the main point of the conference is not to compete for awards. The main point is to gain experience in presenting your research and in attending a research conference. Everyone who presents at Great Plains is a winner. The awards are simply a little bit of additional recognition.
