SUMMER 2008 AAPT/PTRA WORKSHOP
Updated Friday, July 1, 4:03 p.m.
Workshop Information:
Emporia State University has been selected to offer a Summer 2008 AAPT PTRA workshop during the week of June 30-July 3, 2008. This workshop will be focused on waves and optics. The announcement and application form are available below in the Links section.
Course Enrollment:
Workshop participants will have the option of enrolling in a 2-credit hour course (PH 500/700 AAPT PTRA: Waves & Optics).
Course registration will take place on Monday. A representative from the Graduate School will visit Monday morning to facilitate the registration process.
Workshop Schedule :
We will meet in Science Hall room 35 (see Campus Maps section below).
Sunday, June 29: Check in at South Tower any time after 3 p.m.
Monday, June 30: 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday, July 1: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Wednesday, July 2: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Thursday, July 3: 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Housing:
Participant housing will be in the southern portion of the Twin Towers dormitory, also known as South Towers (see Campus Maps section below). Bed linens will be provided but you are expected to bring your own toiletries and towels. You can check in at any time after 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. You should receive an AAPT PTRA check-in envelope when you check in. The check-in desk is staffed 24 hours per day.
If you are interested in having a family member stay in the dorms for one night or staying through Thursday night, I have been told this is possible, however no child under 13 years of age can stay in the dorms.
Parking:
Campus parking is free in the gray parking zone (see Campus Maps section below) during the summer. If you are staying in the dorms, you will receive a 24-hour permit for the green parking zone (see Campus Maps section below). We will provide you with a parking permit for the week, but you must fill out a form and pick up your permit in person at the Police & Safety office (see Campus Maps section below) on Monday morning at 8:00 a.m. The Police & Safety office is only open 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., so Monday morning is the only available time to get your permit (unless you go during lunch on Monday). You will almost certainly receive a parking ticket if you are parked without a valid permit!
If you are commuting, the simplest parking is around the southwest corner of the campus either in the metered parking or along 13th Avenue in the adjacent residential area.
Meals:
The entire group will eat lunches together in the Skyline Dining Room of the Memorial Student Union every day. Breakfast and dinner for dorm-resident participants (i.e. not commuters) will be in the Lakeview Cafeteria of the Memorial Student Union. You will receive a meal card for breakfast and dinner. There will be a special off-campus group dinner for all participants on Wednesday. There is no on-campus dinner available on Sunday or Thursday.
Campus Maps:
Here is a campus map. The Science Hall (building #19) is in the southwest quadrant of the campus. The Twin Towers complex (building #22) is just to the east of Welch Stadium/Zola Witten Track, near the center of the campus. The Police & Safety office (building #14) is near the northeast corner of the stadium. The Memorial Student Union (building #12) is near the south-central part of the campus. The gray parking zone is at the far north end of the campus. The green parking zone is directly to the east of the Twin Towers complex.
Computers
You can bring a laptop computer and you are supposed to be able to connect to the Internet through the campus wireless network. However, getting the proper configuration might require more time than you are prepared to spend on it. You will have access to computers in a computer lab during the workshop.
