Division of Physical Sciences
Chemistry, Earth Science, Physics
A graduate teaching assistant is responsible for helping with instruction in undergraduate laboratory courses by aiding a professor with materials preparation, grading, and laboratory assistance to students. Graduate research assistantships, involve pursuit of research with a faculty mentor. These positions are available through external funding from NASA, the Kansas Geological Survey, and other governmental sources.
Qualifications
Applicants should have an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in one of the academic disciplines of physical sciences. An overall undergraduate grade-point average of 2.5 or 2.75 for the last two years of undergraduate study is required. Previous undergraduate experience as a laboratory assistant will strengthen the application for teaching assistantships.
Salary and Length of Contract
Assistantships typically extend throughout the academic year (mid-August to mid-May). The teaching assistantship stipends are expected to be around $6000 per academic year. Tuition is waived for students with a teaching assistantship; thus the monetary award is equivalent to about $7000. Graduate research assistantships are more variable in length and value. Some research assistantships are about $8000 per academic year, but tuition is not waived.
