Dr. Marvin Kuehn

Dr. Kuehn is presently a professor in the Department of Psychology, Art Therapy, Rehabilitation, and Mental Health Counseling in The Teachers College at Emporia State University. He received his doctorate in Counseling and Guidance from Texas A&M University-Commerce in 1974 and has a M.S. degree in Rehabilitation Counseling (1969) and a B.A. degree in Zoology and Chemistry (1968) from Emporia State University.
He joined the ESU Faculty as an Assistant Professor in 1973 and continues to teach in both the undergraduate program in rehabilitation services education and the graduate program in rehabilitation counseling. He served as Director of Rehabilitation Programs at ESU for 31 years. He has served on several university and college committees and has served three times as acting Chair of the Department of Counselor Education and Rehabilitation Programs. He served as President of the Faculty at ESU in 1999-2000. He has served as the ESU representative to the Kansas Institute on Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies in Higher Education, the Committee on Advanced Programs of The Teachers College, and the Dean’s Advisory Committee. He was appointed by ESU President, Kay Shallenkamp, during the period 2000-2003, to a special committee revising the Policy and Procedures Manual for the University.
He has made numerous presentations and written several articles and chapters in books in the rehabilitation field addressing topics related to medical implications of disability, disability policy and legislation, professional credentialing, psychosocial adjustment to loss, and trends in rehabilitation. He has written over 50 state and federal grants for ESU totaling over $3 million. He serves as a consultant and peer reviewer for the U.S. Department of Education, the Social Security Administration, and the Ohio Board of Regents. He has been a member of the Editorial Boards for Journal of Rehabilitation and Journal of Rehabilitation Education. He was the President of National Council on Rehabilitation Education (NCRE) in 1989. He was awarded the Distinguished Career Service Award from NCRE in 1997.
In January of 2001, he was recognized as an outstanding faculty member in The Teachers College for his excellence in scholarly activity. He received the outstanding service award for The Teachers College in 1989. He is currently on the National Advisory Committee of the National Institute on Rehabilitation Leadership 2003-2008. He is currently on the Executive Board of the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) which is the national accrediting organization for rehabilitation counseling programs. He served as the President of CORE in 1999 and 2000. He was appointed the Executive Director of CORE in March 2006.
Dr. Kuehn teaches primarily in the areas of medical aspects of disability, foundations of rehabilitation counseling, psychosocial adjustment to loss, grant writing, counseling skill development, and trends and issues in rehabilitation.
