A Word About Design
How often have you made a decision regarding the worth of an offer based on the “quality” of the publication that represents it? Whether it be an advertisement, a brochure, a direct mail solicitation, or a full-color catalog, audiences make snap judgements and rate the value of the offering on the basis of the material they are holding in their hands. Does the paper feel flimsy? Are the colors too gaudy? In publications, the medium is the message.
The copy may say everything you want it to say, but without careful and appropriate design to reinforce your point, the message may seem garbled or even contradictory. The professional designer considers a number of elements in creating a unified whole. Questions regarding size, folding, paper weight and color, type selection, illustration, and photography are among the many issues that must be decided before a publication is ready to be produced.
Our publications coordinator/manager of Printing Services will be involved in discussions with you about your audience, the nature of your message, and the budget you have available. The coordinator then will work with a graphic designer to prepare a proof of your publication. Issues such as eye tracking, color, readability, and the target audience will be considered when preparing your publication.
And now ... design is FREE!!!!
A Word About Image
Every publication created from within the community of Emporia State University is a part of the university's image. Every publication is a potential recruiting tool or can help retain students already enrolled. Because its publications are so vital, ESU must strive for excellence whether it is publishing a short memo, bulletin board flyer, brochure, or book.
If the university's image is presented by a poor-quality publication done on a copier or computer printer, the audience may get the idea that the university is of the same low quality. Everyone loses in that kind of situation. That makes this a partnership between everyone on campus involved in producing materials that project the image of Emporia State University. All must work together with the best interests of ESU and its students as the common goal.
Protecting ESU's Identity
Achieving a consistent identity in all Emporia State University publications depends to a great extent upon the cooperation of faculty, staff, and students. This is a true partnership between members of the campus community aimed at recruiting students, while keeping and assisting those already enrolled, and gaining support of alumni, donors, and the general public.
- Keeping a consistent identity does not mean all publications must look the same. But it does mean that the general public should be able to recognize a certain image and quality which identifies Emporia State University.
- Any use of the name, seal, logo, or logotype must conform to the Graphic Identity Standards.
- Usage or licensing of the name, seal, logo, logotype, or Corky is administered by Public Affairs and Marketing.
