University of Tartu International Summer School 

Dates:

The University of Tartu International Summer School offers four summer programs as listed below:

European and Russian Foreign Policy - July 16-August 3, 2012
Three Universities/Countries Program - July 2, 2012 to July 21, 2012.
Contemporary Baltic Capitals - July 2, 2012 to July 21, 2012.
European Integration: the EU from West to East -July 2 to July 27, 2012

Description of the Program:

University of Tarty Summer School offers four programs as described below:

European and Russian Foreign Policy - This 3-week course is offered jointly with the Center for EU-Russia Studies. The course will meet in three different Estonian cities -Tallinn (at the premises of the University of Tartu Office in Tallinn), Tartu (at the main campus of the University of Tartu) and Pärnu (at the University of Tartu Pärnu College). The aim of this program is to introduce the current issues and mutual relations of and between the European Union and the Russian Federation, as well as the foreign policy and security challenges faced by both regions.

Three Universities/Countries Program - This 3-week programis offered jointly by three leading universities in three countries: University of Tartu (Estonia), St.Petersburg State University (Russia) and Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (Ukraine). The aim of this program is to introduce the crucial changes in societies affected by the collapse of communism. The program will introduce the challenges related to social, economic and judicial reforms and their past, present and future impacts at the local and international scale. Students will learn strategies used in political transition and get acquainted with political structures of different countries.

Contemporary Baltic Capitals - This 3-week course focuses on current economic challenges and business opportunities facing the Baltic societies and business enterprises in this region. It will be offered by three leading Baltic Universities - University of Latvia, University of Tartu and Vilnius University. The program is oriented to business majors and contains strong practical emphasis with company visits in Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius.

European Integration: the EU from West to East - This 4-week program on European integration is in collaboration with Utrecht University’s Summer School (Netherlands) and the International Summer University of the University of Tartu (Estonia). The aim of this program is to introduce the European Union, European Institutions, (shared) foreign policy and new challenges. The course will study both the development towards a united Europe and the enduring diversity of national policy, law and geopolitical background (new) member states have to deal with in the process of European integration.

Estimated Cost:

European and Russian Foreign Policy - 1650 EUR
Three Universities/Countries Program - 2165 EUR.
Contemporary Baltic Capitals - 1690 EUR.
European Integration: the EU from West to East - 1790 EUR.

The fee covers participation in lectures, meetings, site visitations organized as part of the academic program. The fee also covers the cost of course materials, accommodation in hostels during the academic program (two persons in one room), breakfast, field-trips, transportation between the cities and countries where the program is conducted; and other cultural events organized for all the participants of the International Summer University.

Students are responsible for airfare, visa cost, meals, and personal expenses.

 Spanish and Andalucia culture

Dates: June 28-July 31, 2012
Credits: 6
Courses:
  • SA 305 - All students will be enrolled in this ESU course for Spanish culture.
  • Students will transfer 3 credits for Spanish language from Universidad de Granada.
Program Description:

This is an invitation to immerse in the culture of Andalucia, one of the most famous regions of Spain. The one-month study abroad takes place in the vibrant city of Granada. The city of Granada concentrates the many cultural influences in the Iberia peninsula, including Moorish and Jews. Granada is located in the foothill of the Sierra Nevada mountains and has a rich cultural and night life.

The program is open to students of all level of Spanish language. Students will earn credits for learning about Spanish culture and history in English. In addition, students will be placed at their corresponding Spanish level at Universidad de Granada and will transfer credits back to Emporia State University.

Students will stay with Spanish families during the study abroad program to facilitate the learning of the language. The program includes two excursions to historical Spanish cities: Cordoba and Sevilla. In addition, the program includes a guided visit to La Alhambra, one of the most emblematic citadel built during the Arab influence in Spain.  

The program is hosted by the Centro de Lenguas Modernas (Center of Modern Languages) of Universidad de Granada. Universidad de Granada is one of the largest universities in Spain. The Center is dedicated to teaching of modern languages both to international and domestic students.

$3,400

The program includes:

Field Study in London

Program Description: The program is a 10-day trip to England, with students based in London and pursuing projects that include such areas as literature, art, photography, history, and drama.

Chinese Education and Culture Experience

Dates:  May 17-June 11, 2012
Credits:  3 credits

Program Description:

This course provides an opportunity for ESU undergraduate and graduate students to learn about the education and culture in China and to experience the dynamics of globalization and international diversity. The content of the course prepares the students with skills of learning and teaching as a dynamic process and knowledge of ever changing educational needs of students living in a global society (The Teachers College Conceptual Framework).  China, a major player of international economy in the 21st century, not only upholds one of the world's oldest and most complex cultures, but also provides education to the largest population in the entire global society. The students will experience firsthand the education, culture, and society system in China by participating in lectures and seminars on Chinese education and culture, practicing English teaching in the Chinese classroom, visiting schools, and having field trips to the historical/cultural sites. In addition, the students will have opportunities to get involved in the local cultural events, and communicate and exchange ideas with Chinese scholars, students, and local educators.

Methods and Activities: Lectures and seminars, classroom teaching,  

school and family visits, field, historical and cultural trips, Local Events and Culture Involvement.

Estimated Cost:

The host university will offer each student:

  • A stipend of $425 for teaching,
  • Free meals on campus cafeteria for the teaching period (three weeks)
  • Free housing with air-conditioning and bathroom for the teaching period (three weeks)
  • Possibly free local traveling and sightseeing around Guangzhou area at weekends.

Students are responsible for $1,800 for the costs (estimated) of the program, including:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Passport and visa fee
  • Health insurance
  • Tickets for cultural events or site visits if necessary
  • Local transportation
  • Immunization
  • Other additional personal expenses

Dankook Summer International School

Dates:

June 18-July 11 (English Village)
July 12-August 8, 2012 (Academic Program)

Application period: March 31 - May 4

Credits:  3 (transfer credits)
Course: It varies. Students are required to complete a pre-approval form prior to getting acceptance into the program.
Program Description:

 This program is facilitated through Emporia State University partnership with Dankook University. Every year, ESU students visit Dankook University to teach English, learn Korean and other subject areas.

The program is comprised of two parts:

English Village

English Village* is a community at Dankook University designed to simulate an English immersion environment. lnvited native English speaking students (interns) will teach and lead small groups of DKU students English conversation sessions daily.

ESU students are invited to apply for the English Village Language & Culture lnternship Program where they will receive a reimbursement for their flight tickets (up to $1200 USD). Students will arrive 3 weeks before the Academic Program begins and stay in the Dankook University dormitories provided free of charge.

(*) Students attending the English village must attend the academic program.

Academic Program

This program is designed for students who wish to improve their understanding of Korean culture and increase their knowledge of Korean language in a 3-week intensive period.

ESU undergraduate or graduate students who are in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students will earn up to 3 credits (2 courses) transferable to home Universities.

The program offers a wide variety of courses in the following disciplines:

Business and Economics

  • Arts & Humanities
  • Sociology & Cultural Studies
  • Korean Language
  • Korean & East Asian Studies

The program includes optional cultural activities in cooking Korean food, Korean mask making, Korean movie, Ceramic arts, taekwondo, calligraphy, traditional Korean music, traditional Korean dance. 

In addition, the program includes optional field trips such as Seoul city tour/market
Tour, East Sea overnight trip, Cyeongbok & Biwon Palaces, Boryeong Mud Festival, White-water rafting, and Busan.

Estimated Cost:

The program cost $2,400.

ESU students are eligible for a $1,000 scholarship awarded to partner universities.

The program does not include:

  • Airfare
  • International health insurance

Students who wish to be considered for the English Village, you will be eligible for a reimbursement of airfare cost of up to $1,200.

Scottish Libraries, Archives and Special Collections

Tentative Dates:

May 18, 2012 to May 27, 2012 (final dates will be announced by the faculty member).

Course:

Participants must be enrolled in LI 860 XI Current Issues in Global Information Infrastructure. (2 credit hours)

Restricted to SLIM masters-level students who have completed 15 semester hours by the end of Spring semester 2012.
Program Description: Students will visit selected libraries, archives, and special collections in Scotland and gain an understanding of current issues in preservation, digitization, and collection management, particularly with national heritage collections. Proposed visits include the Mitchell Library, the largest reference library in Europe, the genealogy archives in the National Records of Scotland, the information center of the Scottish Parliament, and The John Murray Archive at the National Library of Scotland.
Estimated Cost:
$4,450 (including SLIM out of state tuition fees)
$3,650 (including SLIM in-state tuition fees)

Business Globalization:  International Business Study/Tour to France and England

BU505-Business Globalization: International Business Study/Tour

Program Description: Business Globalization: International Business Study/Tour is an international business program designed to provide a specialized 8-day study/tour opportunity for students interested in preparing themselves for potential managerial careers in international business.  Students will gain perspectives/competencies in foundational areas of business, develop an in-depth understanding of the international dimension to business, and develop enhanced sensitivity to other cultures.  The program is intended to be interdisciplinary in nature and emphasizes the development of cultural, financial, managerial, marketing, and economic understanding of international environments.  The 8-day international experience further enhances students’ international understanding and capability whereby involving students in discussions/tours with various multinational businesses, and will have opportunities to visit numerous museums & historic sites.

$2,850 + tuition at ESU (3 credits)
