Pre-Arrival Checklist

Academic/ Emporia State University Checklist:

  • Bring valid passport with appropriate visa (most students have an F-1 or J-1 visa).
  • Bring I-20 or DS-2019 for ESU.
  • If an F-1 or J-1 student coming from another U.S. institution: submit a completed Transfer Clearence Form as soon as possible.
  • If applicable: TOEFL scores, SAT / ACT / GRE / GMAT scores, official transcripts, examination results or certificate of completion with English translations from previous institutions.
  • If you attended a post-secondary institution outside the United States, bring syllabi or course descriptions as well as official transcripts in English for possible transfer credit.
  • Apply for on-campus housing, if desired.

Health Checklist:

  • Have your eyes and teeth checked and any necessary work done, if possible.
  • Bring an adequate supply of medication.
  • Translate your medical records into English, if necessary.

Travel Checklist:

  • Make travel arrangements.
  • Check with airlines on luggage limits and when to reconfirm your flight.
  • Reconfirm your flight (usually 72 hours before departure).
  • Pack your bags and label your luggage.
  • Don't forget your airline tickets!
  • Give your family an emergency contact number in the U.S. (you may provide them with the OIE contact information)
  • Prepare money transfer arrangements and purchase some traveler's checks.
