Newman Regional Health, 1201 West 12th, Emporia KS
Newman Regional Health is a 59 bed facility accredited by the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program. The hospital provides a wide range of medical and surgical services as well as women's services, critical care, level II nursery, 24 hour emergency services, sleep center, wound care, outpatient services, chemical dependency treatment programs, and hospice services. Newman Regional Health has a history of support for nursing education. A hospital-based diploma nursing program closed in 1993 and now the hospital gives its full support to the baccalaureate program offered through Emporia State University.

Camp Wood, Elmdale KS
Camp Wood is a YMCA facility located approximately 35 miles from Emporia. Approximately 60-65 campers are at the camp on a weekly basis. Camp Wood provides learning opportunities for students enrolled in the NU407 Practicum: Camp Nursing elective course. Students are able to staff the nurses' quarters, administer medications, and attend many of the camp activities.

Colmery O-Neil Veterans Hospital, Topeka KS
Students go to the veterans hospital for the psychiatric/mental health nursing clinical experience. This facility is located approximately 55 miles from Emporia and provides a census with a wide variety of psychiatric mental health conditions. Students participate in one-on-one interaction, group therapy, team meetings, and activity therapies.

Emporia Day Care Center III, Emporia KS
The Emporia Day Care Center III agency provides students with excellent learning experiences. In addition to opportunities to work with newborns, children from culturally diverse backgrounds and children with special needs, the student nurses participate in the routine cares provided the children. Students also evaluate the developmental progression of the children and identify developmentally appropriate play activities and stimuli for the children.

Emporia Presbyterian Manor, Emporia KS
Emporia Presbyterian Manor is a continuing care retirement community providing several levels of living for the older adult client. These levels of living include: independent living, assisted living, and nursing facility care. This clinical facility is a part of the Presbyterian Manors of Mid America. The facility offers students a wide variety of experiences in gerontological nursing.


Flint Hills Care Center, Inc., Emporia KS
The Flint Hills Care Center (formerly Vintage Manor) is a progressive, well organized, long-term adult care facility with multiple client programs and services. This clinical facility offers students a variety of learning experiences in nursing foundations and basic skills as well as medication administration.

Flint Hills Community Health Center, Emporia KS
The purpose of the Flint Hills Community Health Center is to promote wellness, prevent disease, and provide early intervention. This clinical facility offers students opportunities to care for individuals and families through the immunization clinics, family planning clinic, maternal and infant care programs, and the Womans, Infants and Children (WIC) program. The health department also has a busy primary care clinic that provides basic health care for adults and children including physical examinations and treatment of minor illnesses. Students also experience the relationship between community health nursing and environmental health.

Lyon County Jail, Emporia KS
This facility is utilized as a practicum site for senior level nursing students for a community based practice experience.  Correctional nursing focuses on health for incarcerated individuals.  Students participate in coordinating the immediate or long term health needs of incarcerated individuals with the issue of public safety.  In addition they perform assessments, administer medications, and develop and implement health teaching in a unique atmosphere with other multi-discpline health care providers.

Morris County Health Department, Council Grove KS
At Morris County Health Department senior level nursing students have learning opportunities specific to the care of aggregates and communities.  This facility provides professional public health nursing service, including immunizations, WIC nutrition program, family planning, nursing clinics, child care facilities, education, environmental health services, senior services, and home and community based services.

St. Joseph's School in Olpe, KS and
The Emporia Christian School, Emporia KS

These schools afford students opportunities to participate in a "mass" school screening program. Students participate in scoliosis, vision, hearing, and growth and development screenings and gain information on organization and preparation of mass screens. Students also receive experience in documenting/analyzing findings, making referrals, and setting up a mechanism for follow-up of identified health risks/problems.

Student Health Services, Emporia State University, Emporia KS
Students work with RNs and ARNPs who provide cares to college students who seek health services at the university's student health services department.

Tyson Fresh Meats, Emporia KS
This facility is utilized as a practicum site for senior level nursing students for a community based practice experience.  Students have opportunity to perform assessments, provide care, develop and implement health teaching to a population aggregate.  Students learn about workers' compensation and OSHA regulations as it impacts the industrial world specifically and the community as a whole.


Unified School District #253, Emporia KS
This public school system provides nursing students an opportunity to see the role of the school nurse and to observe the reactions of mostly well children to minor and chronic illnesses and to the treatments rendered. Students gain practice in assessing minor illnesses and injuries in children and in assisting in vision, hearing, scoliosis screenings. Immunization schedules are also reviewed.

Wesley Medical Center, Wichita KS
The Wesley Medical Center pediatric unit is utilized to provide students opportunities to care for children and families with a wide variety of needs and illnesses. Students also have opportunities to work with advanced practice nurses and clinical nurse specialists in the pediatric intensive care unit. This facility is located in Wichita approximately 80 miles from Emporia.

Observation Experiences
A number of local agencies and institutions provide observational experiences for nursing students, including the Central Care Cancer Center, Fresenius Renal Care Group, Emporia Family Medicine, Stormont-Vail HealthCare, Emporia Recreation Center, Tyson Fresh Meats, USD 251, and the Special Education Coop.
