The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishments reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing in May/June 2006.

APPOINTMENTS
Elaine Henrie, Director Financial Aid and Scholarships has been appointed to the Student Access and Diversity Committee for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators.
CONFERENCES
Dr. Marsh Sundberg, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, participated in the advisory committee meeting of “Scientific Inquiry through Plants” held at the Botanical Society of America offices in St. Louis, on April 28-30. The purpose of the meeting was to evaluate the current round of pilot classes and to revise the strategic plan in preparation for scaling up to include the Chicago Public Schools in 2006-7. Emporia State plant biology students were involved in the original “proof of concept” round and they, and ESU honors biology students, have participated in the pilot programs for the past three semesters. Betty Richardson, Scholarship Coordinator in the Financial and Scholarship Office attended the Rocky Mountain Association of Financial Aid Administrators Summer Institute at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado June 4 - 9.
PRESENTATIONS
Dr. Marsh Sundberg, professor, Department of Biological Sciences, was an invited speaker in a symposium entitled “Four Eye-opening Science Education Research Studies: Connecting Science and Educational Research” presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science on 17 February in St. Louis. The symposium was sponsored by the section on Biological Sciences - the first time an education-related symposium was sponsored by the discipline section rather than the section on Education and Human Resources. Sundberg’s presentation was “Using Student-Active Investigations to Overcome Student Misconceptions about Evolution and Selection.”
Dr. Sundberg was also invited to present the annual "Ethyl Belk Lecture in Botany" at Miami University, Oxford Ohio on Thursday, March 23rd. The title of the lecture was "The Future of Botany in the American College Curriculum." This year marks the centennial of the Botany Department at Miami University and the Belk Lecture kicked off the centennial events which will continue through mid-summer. On Friday he presented the regular botany seminar on "Teaching Botany to Improve Student Learning."
