The following is a summary of faculty and staff accomplishments reported to ESU Public Affairs and Marketing inJuly 2006

WHO, WHAT, WHEN, AND WHERE

CONFERENCE

Elaine Henrie, director, Department of Financial Aid and Scholarships, attended the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) July 5-8 in Seattle, Washington. In conjunction with the conference she participated in the organizational meeting of NASFAA's Student Access and Diversity Committee.

Dr. Gary Holcomb, associate professor, Department of English, was funded by the American Studies program at TU Dresden to attend the German American Studies National Conference in Göttingen, Germany, in June 2006.

PRESENTATIONS

Dr. Jean Morrow, cair, Department of Early Childhood/Elementary Teacher Education, presented a paper on universal design for learning at the national Teaching for a Change Conference in Park City, UT.

Dr. Gary Holcomb, associate professor, Department of English, was an invited speaker at the Anti-Immigration Law Rally held in Emporia, May 2006. His talk was titled “Anglo-Latino Solidarity.” Holcomb was also invited to serve as Senior Fulbright Specialist in American Studies from May to June 2006, at the Technical University of Dresden, Germany. He taught a six-week course titled “Black Renaissance” in the American Studies graduate program. The Fulbright grant covered travel, expenses, accommodation, and provided an honorarium. Holcomb also organized a panel for and gave a paper at the Hemingway Foundation and Society Annual Conference in Ronda, Spain, in June. The panel was titled “Hemingway and the Black Renaissance,” and my paper was titled “Black and White Unite: Hemingway, Hughes, and Spain, 1937.”

PUBLICATION

Smith, William L., “Experiential tourism standards: the perceptions of rural tourism providers,” International Journal of Services and Standards, Vol. 2, No. 3, 2006, pp. 273 - 285.

Dr. Gary Holcomb, associate professor, Department of English contributed an essay on “Claude McKay” to the three-volume Encyclopedia of the Great Black Migration: Greenwood Milestones in African American History, edited by Steve Reich, and published by Greenwood Press, May 2006. Holcomb’s article, “Claude McKay, Complete Poems,” is appearing in Summer 2006 issue of the African American Review.
