ESU celebrates 100 years as Federal Depository Library site

For 100 years, Emporia State University’s William Allen White Library has provided access to government information as a Federal Depository Library. A celebration set for Monday, Sept. 28 will mark the anniversary and remind area residents of the vast array of information available at White Library through the Federal Depository Library designation.

“This centennial is a milestone for many reasons,” explained Cynthia Akers, associate professor of university libraries and archives. “It means our library has provided access to government information for all ESU students, faculty, staff, and the surrounding Emporia community.”

What kind of information? Library staff members will be demonstrating different search techniques for the facts and figures contained in a variety of government reports and publications. “A local small business owner could learn about assistance from the Small Business Administration. School teachers can benefit from pamphlets and lesson guides from the U.S. Department of Education,” Akers noted.

The information resources even extend to families planning vacations. “From the National Park Service, we have information on national landmarks, hiking trails and historic places,” said Akers.

The centennial celebration ceremony set for 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of White Library will feature Ashley Dahlen, outreach librarian from the United States Government Printing Office in Wahsngton, D.C. Dahlen will present a plaque to the library on behalf of the Government Printing Office. Proclamations from the City of Emporia, U. S. Rep. Jerry Moran, and Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson will also be read.

A cake and punch reception follows the ceremony at 2:30 p.m. The Emporia community and residents of surrounding communities are invited to the celebration.
