ESU students vote in favor of Memorial Union renovation funding
Emporia State University will move forward with plans for an $18.5-million renovation of the Memorial Union, following a student vote April 13-15.
Students approved, 739-181, a fee increase to help pay for the project.
Included in the renovation:
- Creation of new student lounge space and performance area
- Renovation of the current student cafeteria
- An addition on the east side of the building featuring a new entrance, information center and Admissions office
- Redesigned entrances to the building’s west, south and east sides
- Redesigned meeting spaces and traffic patterns inside the building
- Environmentally-friendly improvements to the building’s heating, ventilation and cooling systems
A Lawrence architectural firm, Treanor Architects P.A., designed the renovation plan following a series of meetings with ESU students, staff and Emporia residents.
Construction of project’s first phase is scheduled to begin next spring, and the total project is slated to be complete by fall, 2012.
ESU’s Memorial Union was constructed in 1925 in memory of the students who fought and died in World War I. Additions were constructed in 1958, 1963 and 1972.
