ESU Archives schedules children’s book program
Children’s literature and the artwork that is created for those books will be the subject of a couple of presentations at Emporia State University in early April. The ESU Archives sponsors a presentation by artist Nancy Schon Monday, April 7 at 5 p.m. in Albert Taylor Hall. In addition, Sal McCloskey, the daughter of celebrated children’s book author Robert McCloskey, speaks Tuesday, April 8 at noon in the C of E Room at the Sauder Alumni Center.
Schon is known for her sculptures of Mrs. Mallard and her Eight Ducklings from Robert McCloskey’s “Make Way for Ducklings.” The sculptures are featured in the Boston (Ma.) Public Garden. She will reflect upon her career as a sculptor, and the inspiration she finds in children’s book art.
Sal McCloskey will present a talk and slide presentation, “Family, Art and Inspiration on Scott’s Island,” during her visit.
Both events are free and open to the public. A soup and salad buffet will be available for Sal McCloskey’s presentation at a cost of $9 per person.
The events are being scheduled to remind the public that the ESU Archives are now located on the first floor of William Allen White Library on the ESU campus. Over two miles of compact shelving has been installed to house the extensive collection of records and memorabilia related to ESU’s history.
Samples of original children’s book art are on display as part of the May Massee Collection in the ESU Archives Gallery, located on the third floor of the library. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursdays. The collection may also be viewed by appointment.
