Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty earn excellence awards

Dr. Charles Brown, Dr. Marshall Sundberg, and Amy Sage Webb, winners of this year's Liberal Arts and Sciences Awards of Excellence.

Three members of Emporia State University’s Liberal Arts and Sciences faculty are being recognized for their contributions to the university. ESU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Awards of Excellence were presented to Dr. Charles Brown, Dr. Marshall Sundberg, and Professor Amy Sage Webb.

Brown received the Scholarship Award. He joined the ESU faculty as a lecturer in 1988. As a professor of social sciences, Brown’s professional activity within the field of philosophy has been highlighted during the past year by a number of publications and presentations, many relating to environmental philosophy and intercultural dialogue. “His work extends well beyond the boundaries of Emporia State University and the United States, drawing insights from around the world and providing opportunities for participation in intellectual discourse among a growing international circle of scholars,” wrote a colleague in nominating Brown for the award.

A professor of biological sciences at ESU, Sundberg is the recipient of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Award. Sundberg has taught at ESU since 1997, leading classes ranging from the introductory level to those designed for graduate students. “Dr. Sundberg has a reputation in the department for being a challenging teacher who promotes critical thinking skills,” wrote one of Sundberg’s colleagues.

Amy Sage Webb came to Emporia State in 1996, and now serves as an associate professor of English. Webb has received this year’s Service Award. Examples of the contributions Webb has made include serving as interim president of ESU’s Faculty Senate during the fall 2007 term. She was chosen as president of the organization for the coming school year. Webb also directs the creative writing program at ESU, and serves as advisor for the university’s creative writing student organization and its literary journal.  An English major indicated that Webb “…is invested in the lives of her students. Her mentorship has been of immense importance to me.”

ESU’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has presented Awards of Excellence annually since the 1997-98 academic year to recognize outstanding scholarship, teaching and service to the university.
