ESU grad among top CPA exam scorers

Maj. Rapheal

Maj. Rapheal "Joey" Hamilton

As if monitoring millions of dollars spent in the war on terror wasn’t enough of an achievement, an Emporia State University graduate has earned an additional distinction. Rapheal “Joey” Hamilton is one of ten candidates earning the highest scores on the Certified Public Accountant exam administered by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).

Hamilton, a U.S. Army major, is one of the AICPA’s ten Elijah Watt Sells Award winners. The award is presented to candidates who earn the highest cumulative scores on the four sections of the certified public accountant exam.

In 2007, there were over 76,000 examinees.

Hamilton earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from ESU in 1995. He has served the Army as a comptroller since 2001, and as a combat engineer from 1995 to 2001. He graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1990. Currently, Hamilton is working for the Multi-National Security Transition Command in Iraq.

In 2006, ESU recognized Hamilton as one of its Outstanding Recent Graduate Award winners. That award was presented at the Newburg Outstanding Senior and Outstanding Recent Graduate banquet.

The AICPA created the Sells award in 1923 to honor Elijah Watt Sells, one of the country’s first certified public accountants. Sells was active in the establishment of the AICPA and was a founder of New York University’s School of Commerce, Accounts and Finance.
