Community Chorus seeks new members

Broadway favorites, folk songs, and a composition by an Emporia State University graduate are part of the repertoire for ESU’s Community Chorus this spring.

Dr. Terry Barham, conductor, encourages anyone interested to attend rehearsals. No audition is required. The first rehearsal is 7-9 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28 in Beach Hall room 132. Music will cost approximately $20 and may be purchased at Flint Hills Music or at the first two rehearsals.

Barham is featuring “We Are the Music Makers,” a composition by Joe Markley, an ESU music graduate. Markley has taught music at Chapman High School since earning his degree at Emporia State, and is retiring this year.

Other pieces include songs from My Fair Lady, Camelot, and Paint Your Wagon, folk songs from the British Isles, and some secular music by Haydn.

“Community Chorus has over time been a wonderful outlet for many people to share through music,” explained Barham, a professor of music at Emporia State. “It’s fun, and it’s hard work, but we also find it deeply rewarding as a community of singers who love to share music with others.”

The Community Chorus has two concerts scheduled this spring. The first be part of the Madison Community Concert Series April 29 in the First United Methodist Church of Madison. The second concert will be May 4 at the First United Methodist Church in Emporia, and will also feature ESU’s A Cappella Choir.

Rehearsals are Mondays from 7-9 p.m. in Beach Music Hall room 132 on the ESU campus.
