MASTER IT! program encourages girls to choose math, science careers
Unlocking secret codes, learning about fractals, discovering the geometry of crystals and many more interesting topics await a group of young women who will take part in Emporia State University’s ninth MASTER IT! program in June. The program is open to seventh and eighth grade girls, and takes place the week of June 9-14, 2008, on the ESU campus.
MASTER IT! is an acronym for “MAthematics and Science To Explore caReers: Investigating Together.”
“It’s a camp that encourages young women in mathematics and science,” explained Dr. Betsy Yanik, professor of mathematics, computer science and economics, and a co-director of the activity. In addition to hands-on learning activities, the students also get to hear from women professionals in fields such as engineering, pharmacy, veterinary science and several health-related occupations.
“The purpose is to demonstrate the importance of mathematics and science in our lives, to showcase interesting careers, to inspire them to continue enjoying math and science, and as an extra bonus to have a group of MASTER IT! friends from all over the state to stay in touch with and support each other in the years to come,” Yanik said.
The participating students live with chaperones in Emporia State residence halls during the week-long camp. Cost for room and board for the week is $250, and limited need-based scholarships will be available. Applications for the program will be accepted through mid-May.
