Pianist returns to help Emporia celebrate Cinco de Mayo
An internationally-known pianist makes a return visit to Emporia in May to help the community observe the Cinco de Mayo celebration. Dr. Jesús María Figueroa and four of his piano students will wrap up their visit to Emporia with a public concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 5 in Heath Recital Hall, Beach Hall on the ESU campus.
Figueroa teaches at the National School of Music in Mexico City. Joining him on the Emporia trip are four of his students, Samuel Bográn Castro, Christian Daniel Rojas López, Emmanuel Fernando Garcia Canseco, and Oscar Vázquez Medrano. The concert will feature music for piano by Mexican and Spanish composers.
“This is part of an exchange with their school,” said Dr. Martín Cuéllar, associate professor of music at ESU. “I, along with four of my students, traveled to Mexico City during spring break to perform a concert there.”
Prior to the May 5 concert, Dr. Figueroa and his students will perform for students of Nancy Robohn at Riverside Elementary School on Thursday, May 1.
